Hi,
after some time running LM18 on my media center, I am looking into increasing the performance of my system a bit. I learned that AMD has not been supporting the older fglrx graphics driver for some time (since Mint18), and open source drivers are being used on newer systems.
I have an A8 7600 APU (Kaveri) in my system and it has not been running too well since I installed Mint18 some years ago - at least not to its' full potential.
Reading through the internet, I see that the open source AMDGPU (not PRO) has seen a performance improvement lately (see https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... 18.2-Boost and https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... 2018&num=1)
I am looking to reinstall my system now, and the question I have is if I should install Mint17 and run the old fglrx proprietary drivers, or if I should install Mint19 with the community supported AMDGPU (not PRO) driver.
Can I expect the older, but official AMD drivers (fglrx) to have better performance than the new (AMDGPU)?
I use my media PC for browser livestreams, Kodi, Steam in-home streaming and never run games locally on it (though this could change if I get better performance). I do not use any Mint18+ specific features.
Thank you,
AMD performance Mint17 fglrx vs Mint19 AMDGPU
