Mint 19 xfce - hard freezing often

Post by saucoide »

Hi!
I recently installed linux mint 19 xfce on my laptop and keeps happening very often (randomly between 15min to a few hours) that it completely freezes and it doesnt respond to any commands, after a couple of seconds the fan speeds up just stays like that and im forced to hard reboot it.

I've tried to google for solutions and what i found is mostly for nvidia graphics but mine is not, also found a reference mentioning the realtek card but im not sure how it is related. I havent noticed anything special that triggers it, it seems to happen randomly, sometimes when the browser is open, sometimes a video, sometimes nothing at all. I also tried checking the syslogs whenever it happens but there seems to be nothing being written at the times it happens.

a post in the forum recommended trying an older kernel but it didnt help in this case, also i dont think its a hardware problem because it doesnt happen if i boot to windows 10

Anyone had a similar problem or can point me to something else i could check? this is my system

Graphics: Card: Intel Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display
Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )

Open the Window Manager Tweaks program, go to the Compositor tab, and un-check the Enable display compositing checkbox. . . Try it like that for a while. Let us know the outcome.

or, (same thing as above, just different method)

Open the Display Settings program, and switch from Xfwm4 + Compositing to just Xfwm4.

That's what I wanted to suggest but couldn't find it on Pjotr's site and was too stupid sleepy to think to look in my own settings!

Nothing wrong with that idea. I'm still using 18.3 Xfce.

The other thing I was considering mentioning was to watch your temps. Your inxi showed 51 degrees 25 minutes after booting up. That may have been a factor. And, it's also possible a reinstall might've fixed it.

Anyway, 19.1 will arrive in November or December. Make a full backup of 18.3 when it arrives then give it a spin.

Good luck.

...Bay Trails are affected by this (long standing) bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051
Sometimes such pops up, and sometimes not...
If you ever happen again to experience semi-frequent unexplained crashes under such,
it would probably be a good idea passing intel_idle.max_cstate=1 to grub2 & see if that fixes it...
