I assume sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/* still returns nothing?

Also, paste back what you got from pulseaudio -vvv please.

Okay. Read through all the logs and I'm pretty sure I've discovered the problem, but I have no idea what the cause is. The issue, I'm pretty sure, is this part near the top of the alsa-info.sh output:

I'm not 100% certain, but snd_hda_intel should be there in most cases (I don't think your bytcr changes this) so let's try this and see if it works:

1. sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel

2. sudo alsa force-reload

3. pulseaudio --start

If this gets your sound going, I suspect it's not going to survive a reboot as it stands, but we can work on that once we know.

I hope this gets us closer still!

Try running the alsa-info.sh script again now that snd-hda-intel is loaded. If you didn't delete the script just alsa-info.sh in the terminal will run it.

This is just crazy! I am really sorry you're having all this trouble getting sound to work!

I need to ask a few questions before making any suggestions just to make sure I am understanding everything correctly.

1. After you did sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel and before the last run of alsa-info.sh did you reboot?

2. Is Windows gone from this computer?

3. Does this problem also occur when running the live version?

4. Have you ever checked if there's a BIOS update for your computer? I just checked and noticed that device came with Windows 10 (32-bit) according to this page with a BIOS update dated about the same time as your inxi output showed. I know the Intel Atom Z3735F is 64-bit, so I'm wondering why a 32-bit OS was preinstalled. I rather doubt this could possibly have any effect on your issue.

5. I know the kernel hasn't been updated since your last reinstall, but were all the other updates applied?

I'm sure I'll think of more, but we'll leave it at that for now.

Yes its crazy I agree

1. No I did not reboot, as you said the modprobe will only last for that session.

2. Yes I installed multiple times with the option to remove everything. There is no option in boot menu to boot windows anymore and I can't see any traces of windows. I am very sure windows is gone.

3.Yes in the live version PulseAudio Volume Control also does not start up and no sound.

4.Yes I also checked and I have the latest version of bios. Everyone online trying to installing Linux on this 2in1 model or similar also has that question why 32bit windows preinstalled? All my search results turned out people with similar systems all suggested installing 64 bit linux. I was wondering if this might be part of the problem and thought to at least test the 32 bit linux on usb, So first thing tomorrow will be to test 32bit linux mint usb.

5. Yes, update manager says:Your system is up to date.

Let's wait and see what happens when you run the 32-bit live version before making anymore guesses as to what's wrong.

I found a post online saying this but have no idea as to its accuracy:

First of all be warned the EFI BIOS is only 32 bit compatible despite the CPU is capable of 64 bit instructons.

However, here is a page where someone got 64-bit Ubuntu installed and mostly working, including sound.

I am finding a lot of issues online with this series and Linux unfortunately. Looks like there's going to be tradeoffs no matter what you do, i.e., sound not working vs camera and wifi not working vs power management issues, etc.

Anyway, I'll wait to see how the 32-bit attempt goes, and wish you the best of luck!

Yes I tried the 32bit Linux mint from two different sources and also the Xfce 32bit and the sound is not working. It is the same problem.
After I create the bootable USB I have to add this bootia32 file in order for the boot menu to pick it up and to be able to boot from the USB. See this post: https://askubuntu.com/questions/775498/ ... -tablet-pc I was surprised that I also had to do this even for the 32bit Linux mint, I expected the 32bit to to already contain this bootia32 file and that I can just create the USB with rufus and boot without changing or adding anything to the USB.

The WiFi and power management works out of the box, I don't need bluetooth or the camera but I need sound.

I am at the point of grasping at straws now. EDIT: Jump to last suggestion first.

Paste back the URL that pacmd list-modules | nc termbin.com 9999 spits out.

Try again sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel then run alsa-info.sh and look to see if snd_hda_intel shows up under !!Loaded ALSA modules and if it does, then try pulseaudio --start

Does apt policy libasound2 show an installed version?

Also, something I should have asked a long time ago, you did disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, correct? If not, maybe you should reinstall after disabling it.

You could try upgrading to a newer build of Alsa by following the instructions on this page. When it sends you to get a deb file, choose the one for Bionic.

The only other thing I can think of is to try a few other distros and see if any of them can produce sound. I'd start with something from Ubuntu in the 18.04 LTS series. I doubt this will work until it's installed and doing that git stuff with UCM that we did earlier.

Last resort, get one of those little USB sound pluggy things like this: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External ... 49F313TS1V
That should bypass your funky sound codec. The downside is it uses a USB port and I think you have only one.

Oh, another possible option. Install and run SMPlayer (apt install smplayer) and go to Options > Preferences > Audio tab and change Output driver from pulse to alsa, then play something with sound on your computer such as /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav Did that produce sound? If so, you can use SMPlayer to play everything local, and use Flemur's advice on using Firefox without pulseaudio here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=257818&hilit=pulse ... x#p1391401 for playing stuff on the web.

Yeah, pulseaudio just refuses to run. Jump to my SMPlayer idea. I doesn't require pulseaudio so we can see if alsa is ok by itself.

There is this woman saying "front center".

The strange thing is if I set the output back to pulse in SMPlayer the sound is still working also if the output is set to default.
But when I reboot the sound stops working until after I run:

Well, we're finally getting somewhere.

I'm afraid this solution is probably the best we are going to be able to get with your hardware at this time. In the future, it is possible a kernel upgrade will include support for your audio codec, that may fix whatever issue pulseaudio is having with your system. When you upgrade the kernel in the future, try to remember to attempt pulseaudio --start afterwards to see if it starts working. It may even say Daemon already running.

I just looked and VLC can also be changed to alsa for audio output in Tools > Preferences > Audio > Output module, so at least you have some choices for multimedia players.

Flemur's Firefox fix I linked to above should get your sound working in that browser. I have no idea if other browsers can be used without pulseaudio. I imagine most can, but I don't know how to alter them myself as I don't use them. If you wanted to, you could start a new thread for whatever browser you wanted to get working with a topic such as "Chrome without pulseaudio possible?"

Important: Most likely, whenever something plays sound on your system, it will now "own" the sound system. This means when SMPlayer has been used, Firefox won't output sound until SMPlayer has been closed. It was pulseaudio's job to handle streams from multiple sources. The only workaround I'm aware of is to use JACK. JACK can be rather tricky to set up and I've been frustrated by it to the point of temporarily giving up on using it. Some applications will not support it as well (I've read Steam and Skype as well as Firefox.) If/when you want to give it a try there are many tutorials and such on using JACK, and here's one that that will even try to work around the non jackified situation: https://alsa.opensrc.org/Jack_and_Loopb ... ack_bridge

I am sorry we couldn't get a better fix for your situation, and like I mentioned earlier, it is possible a different distro might work out of the box. Ubuntu Studio might be a good candidate if you were planning on creating/editing sounds/videos.

Thank you so much for your support. I learned a lot.
I will keep that in mind (pulseaudio --start).

I really only use this machine for Youtube and use Chromium browser normally, but if I can't get chromium to work without PulseAudio then I will switch over to Firefox.
For now, I will stay with mint there is just something I like about it that other distros don't have.
I think I will manage with this workaround.
