Going back to a kernel

Post by dave8671 »

I never had to do this before. I upgraded the kernel to 4:15.0.34 from 4:15.0.33 and I want to go back the 4:15.0.33. How do I do this? shut down issues and odd bionic texts top of screen last night.

Generally: reboot into GRUB, pick the kernel you want from GRUB by using the arrow keys, press enter. If your machine does not show GRUB as it boots, press and hold Shift during boot and see if that helps.

you can also use mintupdate. this also allows for more choices to try. don't forget to create a timeshift in case something goes very wrong

No, Mintupdate doesn't allow you to load an earlier kernel. It does allow you to install earlier kernels, but that's not the same thing.

I had issues changing the kernel but I figured out that the
TLP battery addons, were built into the 413034 kernel had,to remove them than use grub to change the
to 413045. After that all is normal and reinstalled the battery addons. I learn as I go.

I see. I could have sworn it allowed to change them in mint 19. I guess I wasn't actually changing them
I also noticed I cannot access grub using the shift button. the only button that works for me is F8. why is that? no mint tutorial says this works but it does on mine.

It's a difference in terminology. @Moem is referring to a kernel being loaded at boot time, which is not the same as installing a kernel. You can install kernels in Mintupdate but it isn't "loaded" until you boot it.
