Post by MrEen » Fri Sep 28, 2018 8:55 pm

Hi royston, and welcome to the forum.

I spent months working with a memeber here with the same problem and same system specs you've shown. The "solution" was upgrading to Mint 19 then following the steps here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

When that page sends you offsite to download a deb file, get the one for Bionic. Bionic should be at the top of the list.

You say you're already running 19, so that link should help you take care of the rest.

Good luck, and keep us in the loop on your progress.

Thank you and I am presently downloading Linux Mint Cinnamon 19. I found that I was actually using a version of 18.
I will post when I have followed you guidance -

The link at the very bottom that ends in .deb

Click on it to download it (make sure you choose to download.) Then follow the instructions back at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

EDIT: In your case, in the terminal type cd Downloads followed by sudo dpkg -i oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.201808050301~ubuntu18.04.1_all.deb

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon No Sound

Did all that.for example:
alex@Sartoris:~$ sudo dpkg -i oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.201808050301~ubuntu18.04.1_all.deb
alex@Sartoris:~$ shutdown -r now

Packages seemed to install correctly. Still no sound. Still only "Dummy Output" and still "No input sources are currently available" even though I had Audacious playing a tune (animated bar graph active but no sound).
Any ideas?

While I think of the best route forward, in your File Manager make sure hidden files are shown by pressing Ctrl-H. Then doubleclick on .config, then doubleclick on pulse and delete all the files in this folder.

Now open a terminal and type pulseaudio -k then wait a few seconds and test your sound.

I doubt this is going to help, but at least it gives you something to do while I think.

Also, paste back the output of aplay -l and inxi -Fxz please.

There are a few things I'd like you to try.

First, boot to your BIOS and ensure the internal sound isn't disabled.

Next, upgrade your kernel. Start with the latest in the 4.15 series you're running. If that doesn't help, try the latest in the 4.18 series.

If still no sound, paste back the output of the following: lspci and dmesg | grep snd

When pasting large blocks of text, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

Thanks and good luck.

I will work on those.
First obstacle encountered when trying to install Ukuu:

Code: Select all

alex@Sartoris:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:teejee
Cannot add PPA: 'Expecting value: line 1 column 1 (char 0)'.

I rebooted and examined my BIOS. I made one change: DVI Port Audio was disabled. Now enabled. Completed boot and still no sound.

I did an update that included a new kernel:
kernel4.15.0.34.png
Still no sound.
I am reading up on changing to a 4.18 kernel.

I don't know how to get the newer kernel series on Update Manager. Here is a screenshot taken from the web (not as it is on my computer) but this is what I would like to have:

I am sorry getting the sound to work is this much trouble. For the moment, let's not worry about the 4.18 kernel (I thought you'd have it available in the Update Manager.)

Along with the last two things I asked you to paste the output of, add this one: dmesg | grep '00:1f.3'

I am wondering if it actually installed. It appears you ran dpkg in your Home directory, but the file was most likely in your Downloads directory. I'm no expert on this part, but I would have thought you'd get messages during the install, or even a message that the file was not found. I do realize you said "Packages seemed to install correctly", but I just wanted to double check.

The reason I am bringing this up, I have found many Sunrise Point-H HD Audio users with the same issue (and I think all of them on bus-ID 00:1f.3 like yourself) for whom this was the permanent fix. The only stumbling blocks have been when the user was using a kernel that was not in the same series the daily snapshot was built with. You should be fine there as the Bionic release was built with a 4.15 kernel.

After we see the output of the commands I have asked for, we might try uninstalling the daily build and reinstalling it to see if that helps.

Thanks again MrEen.
I changed to the correct directory and executed the install command again. I rebooted and still have no sound. Here is the dmesg result and a record of the instalI. It is quite long and you may not even want it but here it is:

Re: Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon No Sound

Can I see the output of lsmod | grep snd please? I just want to see that snd_hda_intel did indeed load. If it is not in the list, you can go ahead and try sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel then test sound.

Anothing thing, when testing sound, also check aplay -l each time to see if has started finding a sound card and report when there's success..
