HP Omen laptop soundcard cannot use headphones and internal mic together

Post by retrodpc »

HD Audio laptop soundcard cannot use headphones and internal mic together. Can use internal mic with internal speakers however.

Laptop model: OMEN by HP 17-w053dx

lshw output for soundcard:

Code: Select all

        *-multimedia
             description: Audio device
             product: Sunrise Point-H HD Audio
             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 1f.3
             bus info: pci@0000:00:1f.3
             version: 31
             width: 64 bits
             clock: 33MHz
             capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list
             configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=32
             resources: irq:142 memory:94528000-9452bfff memory:94510000-9451ffff
This is minor problem, however any way to use internal mic and headphones together would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi retrodpc.

I've had nightmares working with people with the same sound card and bus-ID that you have, but at least your sound is working, so tweaking shouldn't be too hard.

My suggestion is to install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.)

I don't think it should be too hard to figure out how to select the headphones on the Output Devices tab and the internal mic on the Input Devices tab. If something seems awry, check the Configuration tab.

Make sure to check if anything is muted. In fact, that may be all you need now. Run alsamixer in the terminal to see if the internal mic is muted (shows MM at the bottom of the column.)

Thanks for replying!
I tried what you had said, but selecting internal microphone yields appearing as unplugged. Unplugging the headphones results in the microphone working as usual.
Configuration is Stereo Analog Duplex, which appears correct.
If anyone has any advice that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Let's see the output of inxi -Fxz and aplay -l please. Your laptop/sound card combo may have a workaround to fix this before we go to hdajackretask.

Re: HP Omen laptop soundcard cannot use headphones and internal mic together

Sorry retrodpc, I should have asked you to first try using the mic even though it said Unplugged. Go ahead and give that a try, then if it doesn't work try the following.

In the terminal type xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and when the file is open scroll to the bottom and add the following new line:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-amic
then save the file and reboot.

If that doesn't fix it, we'll try something a little more complicated.

Good luck.

I put in the line and it seems to have worked with some tinkering in alsamixer. Looks like my work is now cut out for me :p

Thank you for your assistance!
