Problems reading USB devices

It started with the latest upgrade to 19.0 but I didnt get around to asking about it til now. Whats is happening is that if I put a USB thumb drive or phone on any USB port I usually (not always) get a message "The folder contents could not be displayed". If it is a phone I get the message "Could not display mtp://.....". Sometimes I can access the device for a while but eventually I will go to open a directory and then it will again hang. It makes no difference which USB port or which USB device I use it happens with all of them.
