I've been using Mint for about 2 months now with the usual amount of issues. Today I tried to play something through headphones (I've done this before and it worked fine) and there was no output. I unplugged the headphones and there was still no output. I restarted, and the only sound device in the settings was Dummy Output. I'm dual booting, so I started up in Win 10 for the first time in a bit to see if sound was working in there, and there was no output there either. I think this might be an actual hardware issue (it wouldn't be the first or second time ASUS cards have randomly stopped working on me), but I want to be sure there's not something I'm missing. Am i screwed?

Hi splitter_triplets, and welcome to the forum.

It does look bad for your sound as there was no audio listing at all from your inxi report. I'm no expert on hardware so I have no suggestions on troubleshooting that part, but in the meantime, something like this should still work both in Windows and Linux.

Good luck.

Update for anyone who might be having the same problem. I'd accepted that this was a hardware issue and resigned myself to not having sound on this laptop, but just now my battery ended up running completely down (even though I had it plugged in, another problem I've been having). When I restarted into Mint the audio problem had fixed itself. I'm still not quite sure if this was a hardware or software issue, but if anyone else is having a similar problem you can try letting your battery completely die.

inxi -Fxz now also contains

Code: Select all

Audio: Card Intel Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
           driver: snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1f.3
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.15.0-36-generic

Wow! Don't think I've ever seen that fix before. Thanks for the update!
