Sound comes out of speakers and headphones

Postby houms » Sat Jun 20, 2009 10:13 pm

Good day folks,
I have just installed mint on a vostro 1520 laptop. Everything is working great and I am very pleased with the distro, except I hae one issue with the sound. it works but when i plug in headphones, it comes out of the headphones and the speakers at the same time. I cannot get it to just play on the headphones only. Please does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I believe this laptop uses snd-hda-intel. I appreciate any assistance.

First off thank you for your reply. I appreciate it, but that thread is well over a year old and is referring to Gutsy. Most of the posters refer to installing kernel from gutsy backports, but I am using mint 7 x64 rc1 though the situation is the same in 32 bit version of mint so I don't see that advise as helpful. I looked through the link and nothing is relevant to my particular issue. can anyone provide me with help?

I can say i dual boot this laptop with sidux and with the .30 kernel sound works flawlessly in sidux, but i think that is more to do with newer version of alsa.

but can anyone explain what the hell is going on? I mean I am loving mint, but this is a pretty annoying issue. thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I found my answer by installing the newer version of alsa 1.20 from source. It fixes the issue with intel hda.

Hi,
I have the same issue with my Vostro 1320.
Unfortunately I am still kind of new to Linux and I don't have a clue how I install the new ALSA version "from source".
Could someone help me out and explain how to do this?
I'd be very happy. Thanks a lot!

Same issue. What the heck does "from source mean"

Hi Zeke!
I found out!
Check this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and follow the instructions on "Update to the Latest version of ALSA".
Make sure you download the latest stable versions. I got the 1.0.20 driver, lib, and utils package from the top right links on that website: http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

Result: All sound problems fixed. Even the internal microphone.

Have fun! :)
