say I am already on a intel 270 series motherboard so do I need to do a clean install of mint or can I just swap parts and go for a bootup ?
I know that if I were in windows I be doing a fresh install of windows but does this apply to Linux ?

Why such a featureful motherboard with an i3 CPU? Can't you run to one of the over-clockable i5 models?

well I agree that I could have went with a cheaper model , but I learned a lesson as far as onboard sound . See I bought a cheepie asrock H270 pro ( which I am using now ) and the onboard sound blew chunks .It had the Realtek 892, I would have to turn up the volume to over 50% on my speakers just to hear the sound . Very muffled . Most of the z390 lower end boards have Realtek ALC892 , vs the Realtek ALC1220 that is on the extreme 4 . In fact most all the z390s under 150.00 have subpar sound .
Oh I could run a sound card but that is hit or miss as I had issues with 2 sound cards , the soundblaster audigy RX would not even work in mint but fine in manjaro. But even then it would disappear on cold boot or the asus zonar that just wants to , by default , only play out the headphone jack . Done with sound cards in linux
:)
Could have went with a cheaper chipset but I would loose the ability to overclock cpu and memory , the z390 is what the z370 should have been . But Intel rushed out a lobotomised chipset that had less USB features then the b350 chipset . I did my research . This asrock z390 extreme is best bang for the buck as far as Z390 goes https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z390%20 ... /index.asp

Anyway that is why , seeing I already have some ddr 4 2900 memory I am not letting that go to waste :D

well just got the system built , linuix mint booted right up . Updated the bios to the latest ME firmware 12. something or another .
Onboard sound is great , very nice . what I would expect . Took my memory up to xmp setting of 2666 Mhz booted no issues . will have to do some testing but looking very promising .
Way faster the my old i-3 7120 at 4.1 Ghz
well off to try some games
