Comaptible webcams

Postby steveh6883 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 7:07 am

Hi all

After having trawled the forums I have yet to find any soild recommendations for compatible webcams, so I thought I would create this post & hopefully generate a helpful list for anyone else searching for the same thing

Anyway, the question is:

Are there any recommendations for 'Out of the box' compatible webcams that will work with Linux Mint7 & Skype, without the need for any terminal panel modifications?
(bear in mind there are a lot of Linux newbies here as Linux popularity as a whole grows)
For me personally, this is the only thing stopping me from ditching Windows altogether!

As far as I can tell, the ones most likely to work are those built in to a laptop. Here's the main page for webcam info:
If you have a question that has been answered and solved, then please edit your original post and put a [SOLVED] at the end of your subject header
Hint - use a google search including the search term

From most reports, Logitech has fairly decent support in Linux. I am not sure where you are in the world, but you can perhaps find models similar to ... 6826104253 which work in Linux by simply plugging it in. I have a friend with this model, and he reports it to work in Ekiga and Cheese on his Mint 6 64-bit system.

"Just work" webcams

Postby pdc_2 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 6:40 pm

some suggest that the best thing is to go for UVC webcams;

What are they? "They are a class of webcams that support the USB Video Class (UVC) and work without specialized drivers"

this page has a list;

others webcams need the gspca driver; although installed on the 2.6.27 kernel, there are problems

here is the page for gspca
