ACPI error nvidia-SMI, power management, safe to work on LM?[SOLVED]

Post by xdj1nn »

I am for the most part wondering whether or not my installation was done correctly and creating this post before I continue on as I kind of went about the installation recklessly (I shotgun my way into Linux mint 19 Cinnamon running commands from searches online :? ..details below). I also haven't found any posts online in regard to Linux mint 19 being compatible on a Gigabyte Aero 15x V8. Im not sure what I did to get it to login after the black screen and wondering the installation was successful.
At the present moment I only plan to use Firefox and LibreOffice. At least until I can figure out whether or not the installation isn't damaging my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Was the installation successful?
Are the ACPI errors critical or important or am I damaging my laptops hardware?..
Is there a way to downgrade nvidia drivers to utilize optimus without getting black screened at login.

I ran recommended installation (running dual-boot w/ windows 10)

Issues after installation supposedly finished:
  • 1. After the package finished installing it would not reboot.
  • 2. After forced reboot Couldn't log into the system ( screen would go black, only mouse would move.)
The following packages have unmet dependencies: nvidia-driver-390 : Depends: libnvidia-gl-390 (= 390.77-0ubuntu0.18.04.1) but 390.87-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages
  • 3. went into the safe mode boot option after some searching it appeared to be the open source noveau driver causing the black screen at login (i think). More searching online in regard to the error listed above and eventually came across this link, ran the 3 commands
https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/482
How to fix broken packages using the Command Line
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install gtkorphan

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade

sudo aptitude -f
  • 4. searched for the Nvidia driver that came up on the error I got and then reboot. Finally the system loaded after that. :!:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

For the most part the issue I was facing involved the nouveau driver, as it was preventing me from logging in on boot after the installation. Somehow all related to Optimus dual GPU (at least I think thats what was going on I don't know I'm new to all of this still trying to understand everything to prevent it from happening again in the future. I’m not 100% sure what I did, but the issue seemed to be resolved now. Figured I would leave this post in case anyone came across this issue with dual gpu's and going minty.

formatting the partition, reinstalling Mint 19 tara, and opting out of third party firmware installation. That enabled me to login without the black screen

After logging in:
  • I applied all updates offered in software Update manager and then ran following in terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
^ "probably wasn't necessary as nouveau was preinstalled".

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
  • Then installed nvidia-driver-370 via driver Manager

Eventually I upgraded the nvidia driver to 410, so that I can test out the Gpu on Steam Proton & also because it included bug fixes to nvidia-Prime.
Added the synchronization state for PRIME Displays to nvidia-settings.
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverR ... 9110/en-us

I used the same method listed above with the exception of loading the intel gpu first (wasn't sure if the Nouveau driver was blacklisted or if upgrading the driver removes older driver configurations..)
  • X-Server-Settings > switch to Intel Powersaving
Then purged the 370 driver and installed 410 driver.

Also some things I noticed:
  • NV-X-server-Settings works perfectly when either Intel/Nvidia GPU is loaded on (Nvidia driver 370).
  • X-Server-settings Only works with the nvidia gpu loaded (Nvidia driver 396 & 410)
  • Nvidia Prime offloading via Logging out and back in works on all three drivers (NV-Drivers 390, 396, 410)
  • Offloading via logging out and in disables X-server functionality (GUI) for both GPU's not sure why, reboot brings it back for nvidia gpu
As far as the hardware issues I was worried about I figured I would try to see if updating the kernel would resolve.
I read this information listed here regarding kernel 4.16 coffee-lake support https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/ ... ack-recipe I wanted to try out kernel 4.16, but wasn't sure where to source that kernel in the repository. So I upgraded the kernel to 4.18 ( via this method https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/2). I know its not supported for mint 19, but I figured my hardware would, and so far the only issue I'm facing is the software Pulse effects equalizer crashing.

Also found some interesting information regarding ACPI errors & nvidia optimus:

Going to stay on this kernel and only use nvidia prime until nivida officially releases a driver that supports native gpu switching like windows.

Anyway hopes this helps anyone facing the black screen of death with dual Gpu.

These are the outputs I have currently.
