Low Disk Space on "filesystem.root" [SOLVED]

On one installation of Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit, This message keeps popping up.

This message started popping up after some updates I did a few weeks ago. I use this installation to try things so I don't trash my main one, which I need to work properly.

Emptying the trash isn't sufficient other than for a very short time, then the message pops up again. How do I correct this? I tried 'Examine' but don't know enough about what I'm looking at to figure it out.

I expect the fix is simple but I'm a functional user, not an expert, on Mint. Thanks for any direction on this.

Thanks, Pjotr. That did the trick. Just cleaning the cache and removing Asian fonts was enough to not get the pop-up. I still went ahead and removed 24 of the redundant kernels, leaving 2 plus the active one. I can see I'll have to do the same with my main installation, too.

Many thanks for the help.

Great! Very useful reading.

Found 2 huge logfiles in /var/log/

Code: Select all

-rw-r----- 1 syslog 7,4G Feb 13 00:07 syslog.1
-rw-r----- 1 syslog 7,4G Feb 13 13:56 kern.log
Both files full of

Code: Select all

usb 1-1: usbfs: process 18108 (events) did not claim interface 0 before use

And most of my space was used by Timeshift stored in /timeshift/snapshots/, solved it temporary by erasing some of them and changed the schedule settings to keep less backups. I guess it's a better idea to store the Timeshift backups elsewhere but that's a different topic.

Complete noob here.
Can't figure out how I may increase my "File System" size so it may stop bugging me. It does go to 0 bytes on and off though here it says 875.6 MB
