DVD drive won't read DVDs but will read CDs (Settled)

Post by Mike123 » Fri Nov 16, 2018 10:24 pm

So when I put in a DVD it samples but doesn't read it but will play a CD as it should.

The properties tab reports this info for the drive:
Name: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT60N
Type: Unknown (application/octet-stream)

*******This might make a good read and help someone else out, I ended up swapping my drives out then everything worked as it should, the drives I took out went into other machines and worked fine there. I can only surmise that an update made this mess.
This happened on two Laptops about the same time.***********

Here is the other requested info:

Make sure you have the package mint-meta-codecs installed
Check with Synaptics Package Manager

It is also possible the drive itself is at fault.
Different laser pickups and circuitry are used for cd vs dvd.

Thanks all41

I do have the codecs package and it appears to be the latest version (2018.06.08)

I have the same problem on two laptops, they worked fine with windows 7, the other is an Acer I just figured I'd work on one at a time and they would both need the same fix.

I stand corrected, they (I have two laptops both with recent installs of LM this one and an Acer) neither will read a DVD and both are squirrelly with audio CDs, that is some CDs they will read and try to play some they won't, all I have tried are store bought commercial CDs.

What both drives do is search for a longer than usual amount of time then they may play the CD or not.
With a DVD they search then stop then search some more several times then nothing, again all store bought commercial DVDs.

Thanks for your help with this puzzle.

Any chance the DVD problem is a Region Code conflict, e.g. the DVD has a North America code and the Player-hardware code is set to Europe?

https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

Here's a test from Ask Ubuntu:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/677157/ ... -in-ubuntu
Linux Mint 19 x64 Cinnamon 4.15.0-42-generic
Gigabyte GA-AB350M-D3H (F20) / Ryzen 5 1600 / Micron Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400 2x8GB / Sapphire Radeon HD6450

Hope I didn't make a mess, I installed mint-meta-mate , now it will play CDs better but still no love for DVDs.

Maybe try mint-meta-xfce ???

Good thought, but no, regionset says its region 1. :(

Hi Mike123,

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information. You did not use the "-d" on the "inxi" when you first posted.

Hi Mike123,

I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing. The "inxi -Fxzd" already includes the "-d" (drives) flag parameter which can be run separately with a space after the "inxi", "inxi -d".

You might consider updating the Linux Kernel above the 4.15.xx series perhaps something in the 4.18.xx series and rebooting afterward. Although not related to your post, I would also check for a Bios update and if there is one install that.
Drives:
Optical-1: /dev/sr0 model: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT60N
rev: A102 dev-links: cdrom,cdrw,dvd,dvdrw
Features: speed: 24x multisession: yes
audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram state: running
From what I can tell the drive is recognized and should be working unless the drive has worn out. Yes, moving mechanical drives like DVD/CD/Blu-Ray drives, hard disks, etc... do wear out and get out of alignment. I have had to replace a few of these over the years. Fortunately, DVD/CD burner writers are relatively low-cost $25 or less for internal or external USB drives even Blu-Ray burner writers are reasonably priced now.

You can make sure the drives optical sensor is clean and that the discs are also clean.

Thanks AndyMH,
You were right it didn't have "libdvd-pkg" so I added it, no love, then I added a few more that sounded promising, still won't play or even mount the dvd.

Back to the drawing board.

I'm going to download a different distro, something not based on Ubuntu and give that a try.
I suppose I could try windoze again but I'd rather not.

Bugger! When I was running 18.3 (now 19.0), I couldn't play DVDs. Found that libdvd wasn't installed, installed it and I could play them. The only other thought I've got is install handbrake (it's in the repos). It's for ripping DVDs, but you will at least find out if it can read your DVDs, if not play them. Note, it's not very good with copy protected DVDs.

No luck there either Handbrake can't see it either, it's just not mounting like a CD will, it's very strange.

Mike123, I am a movie and music lover myself. That is a real bummer that you cant play these discs.

What kind of dvd/cd software do you use for reading these cd's and dvd's? Somehow I dont see any mention which program automatically tries to play and read your cd's and dvd's. Is it K3b? Or Mediaplayer? Or Vlc?

You have had 2 different computers on which you installed LinuxMInt and neither could play DVD's? Then it is likely that it is a software problem.

Have you tried to play store bought music cd's from artists? Or did you buy cd-roms and burned music on it yourself? You mentioned you were able to burn dvd's, but you cant play them. Which burn program do you use for burning cd's and dvd's? K3b? I have had a lot of troubles with that program myself. Identical problems to yours after installing K3b.

You could try a fresh new install of LinuxMint 19 one more time. I just cant imagine your problem cant be solved easily...

I generally use VLC to play either, no auto launch is enabled so far at this point it should open up the "what do you want to open with" dialogue box.
All are store bought CDs and DVDs.
No I haven't tried to burn any, that must have been someone else.
The DVD won't "Mount" like a CD will, it's very odd indeed.

You wrote yourself that burning isnt a problem in an above message. But do I understand you well, that you have not tried to burn any cd or dvd?

Have you tried reading the DVD's and CD's with Vlc only? Or have you tried other video programs as well? Mediaplayer for example? Have you installed K3b in the recent past? When I had installed K3b all the other videoprograms went beserk and I did get similar errors as you are now experiencing.

If you cant find any solution, sometimes a new install can be the quickest way to solve the problem. If you have a fresh new install of LinuxMint 19 WITH the multi media codecs added DURING the installation process, you can better rule out any other accidental changes to your system. I have used a fresh new install for myself quite often, to solve problems I had accidentally caused myself.

UDF Volume?

Disks Utility might report that there’s No Media in the drive even if you know the disc is there. Take the disc out and gently clean it before reinserting it. Open a CLI prompt by holding down Ctrl, Alt and T at the same time. Try issuing the command sudo mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /cdrom and pushing enter. You may be asked for your administrator password. If you have more than one optical drive, your device file may not mount to /dev/sr0, and you’ll need to use the name given in the Disks Utility in order to do so.
