Front Audio Jacks: No sound. <Solved>

Post by Smeejo1 »

Coming over to linux from Windows. On windows my audio jacks on the front of my computer worked fine. Now on linux I get sound out of the back audio jacks but not the front. I was using manjaro but couldn't get either front or back to work and usb ports on front didn't work either. Switched to using Linux Mint 19 (Cinnamon) now and everything works except the Front audio jack.

I've ran the driver update, system updates, and followed everything the welcome screen suggested for first steps. My motherboard manufacturer (msi 760GM-P23(FX)) doesn't have any drivers for linux listed at all, only windows. I've searched through these forums and using startpage but don't see anything that fits my issue.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte G31M and have similar ports for audio - front jacks for headphones out and microphone in. the back panel has LineOut, Headphones and MIC in. I found that plugging in headphones into the front jack didn't work. Click on the speaker icon in tray and select output device as headphones. That got it working. The Line output option and Headphones output both work for the back ports of headphones/lineout. That is for the 5.1 option perhaps.

Hi Smeejo1, and welcome to the forum.

The first thing to check is to run alsamixer in the terminal. When it opens, you may have to press F6 to change audio cards. Look for columns that have MM at the bottom which means that item is muted. Use the right/left arrow keys to select columns and press the m key to unmute. Be aware that there may be more columns than you can see. Keep using the right arrow key until no new columns appear.

If that doesn't help, please add the results of running aplay -l in the terminal in your next post. Also, start a song or video then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and add that output as well.

Good luck.

I think this might fix you.

Install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) and go to the Configuration tab. Set the Profile that doesn't have HDMI settings to Analog Stereo Duplex. Start something with sound and if you still don't hear anything check the Output Devices tab and the Playback tab to see if you need to change anything in those.

Hope that helps.

PulseAudio fixed it. Changed the configuration tab for "built in audio" to Analog Stereo Duplex which enabled the headphones option for output devices.

Thanks for your help everyone.
