[SOLVED] Can't apply changes in driver manager

Post by fraco »

Hello,

I have just installed the last release of 'Mint Tara' on the laptop 'Toshiba Satellite C55_c_1LD'.
In the driver manager, I select the Wifi driver but I can't apply changes as it is showed in the capture attached: the button is grey and not activated

Can anybody help me on this issue ?

Thanks a lot

Franck

Hello, Franck.

To me it looks as if your system can use exactly the wifi driver to be seen in your screenshot. It is already in use. So you only have the choice between
  • using the driver (no change, hence nothing to apply)
  • not using the driver (selecting this should enable the apply button, but not recommended, because it would disable your wifi adapter)
You might post an

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
report. It would reveal whether my understanding is correct or not.

Best regards,
Karl

Hi, Franck.

You had not told that you could not configure your wifi connection before.
Please, post the output of the terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Hello, Franck.

Oh. I guess, I finally understand.
Driver Manager offers a driver for your wifi adapter.
Yet, the system does not load it at all.

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Broadcom Limited BCM43142 802.11b/g/n bus-ID: 07:00.0
           IF: N/A state: N/A mac: N/A
Let me do some search whether the combination
+ Toshiba SATELLITE C55-C notebook
+ Kernel 4.15.0-42 (or some other 4.15.0 kernel)
+ Broadcom Limited BCM43142 wifi
+ driver not loaded by the system
has been covered in some recent thread.
(Seems a bit as if a number of wifi drivers, which worked fine on the previous kernel series K4.4.0 still, no longer do so with the current kernel series 4.15.0.)

Regards,
Karl

Hi, Franck.

The first thing which I came across, was that enabling the offered drivers software will only be possible, provided "secure boot" has been disabled. Else the system is not permitted to load the driver.
This raises the question to you:
If this an EFI boot machine? Is "secure boot" still switched on?
Provided the answer to both questions is yes, then you should disable "secure boot" and find out whether driver manager will be able to install the offered driver software.

Best regards,
Karl
