Power down & user switch failures

Post by JavaSama »

Wise Mint Gurus,

I was recently gifted an Alienware Aurora R7 desktop and switched it over to Mint. It's working great other than 2 minor annoyances I can't figure out. I hope you can shed some light on the problem

1. When I choose" log out" I get a No signal osd on the monitor and it then goes black and stays that way until I reboot the computer. However if I choose "Switch user" instead this doesn't occur.

2. When I choose " shut down" it does the same as above. The computer never shuts off and stays lit up while the video output is cut to the monitor forcing me to power it off via the power button on the tower itself.

***Edit***: I've also found in my continued attempts to make sense of this that the same occurs if I do the shut down from the user selection screen rather than while signed into either one of the two user accounts I have set up.

I've included my specs below in case it helps.

did the LinuxMint installer indicate that Proprietary Drivers were available ?.
ie: offer to install some drivers for that nVidia video card ?.

does the currently installed system offer any available drivers ?.

It did offer, and is currently using the propriety driver. It shows up under the Driver Manager as follows:

nvidia-driver-390 (Recommended)
Version 390.77-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
NVIDIA driver metapackage

It also offers an open source version.

xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Version 1:1.0.15.2
X.Org X server--Nouveau display driver

My apologies if I'm doing this wrong, but I don't see the option to bump my topic any longer. I'd still appreciate any insight you guys may have.

In an effort to resolve this myself, I've found this page. https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/ ... wn_issues/

I'd followed the advice within but still no luck.
