USB-C Power Delivery not working with external Battery

Post by iIMMIi »

Got an external battery (Xtorm Power Bank Infinity 27000) which is capable of supplying 45W (15V, 3A) by USB-PD. My Thinkpad E480 supports USB-PD and comes with a 45W charger.
If I plug it in (using the included USB-C cable), the status changes from discharging to charging to discharging and so on until it keeps discharging.
Of course I cannot be sure but I think it is most likely a problem with the OS/Kernel/drivers. If it is, what can I try to figure out and resolve the problem?

I hope you can help me. Thank you!

If you need any further details, I'll be happy to provide them :)

Can you tell us what are the output voltage+current of the laptop's AC adapter ?

It's 20V@3.25W since I have a 65W fast charger but one can order the same Laptop with a 45W charger. Don't know voltage and current of the slow charger but should be 15V@3A (only options in UBS-PD specification) which is supported by the power bank.

Well, there's a good chance that your problem lies here. The computer expects a 20V input when you are feeding 15V

Maybe. But I don't think so. The same computer is being sold with a 45W charger which likely uses 15V@3A.
What if the problem lies elsewhere? Where could I start looking?

If the 65W charger outputs 20V, then the 45W outputs 20V too. In addition to that, every single Thinkpad I've come across has a 20V charger, no matter the generation. I'm pretty sure this is the problem

Sorry for doubting, you are right, found it on the backside of the Laptop.

But the power bank is also capable of delivering 20V@2,25A, which is exactly what the thinkpad expects according to it's backside. So it should work.

Ok, so I was wrong ! But even if I can't be 100% sure, it still sounds like a hardware-related issue...
