ALC256 Microphone not detected in Acer Swift 3 SF315-52-81HD

Post by decros »

Hi,
I have installed Linux Mint in this new laptop and for my surprise the Microphone is not even detected, Headphones and Internal Speakers works very well. I attached the results of running inxi -Fxz and aplay -l and also dmesg | grep snd in the terminal as sugested by MrEen.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi again decros.

The very first thing I think you should do is upgrade your kernel via the Update Manager to the 4.18 series. You system is quite new and could possibly benefit from this newer kernel.

After the kernel upgrade, reboot then run dmesg | grep snd again and see if anything has been added to inputs:

If everything is still the same, we'll try some alsa-base.conf edits to see if we can get it recognized.

Good luck.

Sorry decros. I have found the reason for this and at present there is no solution. See my post here: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=279424&p=1576319#p1576319

My suggestion would be to get a USB microphone. There shouldn't be any problem with that.

Just confirmed sound card model supported by Linux Kernel, there are support for ALC256 driver derivative, except for Acer Swift. Since the driver itself is existing, technically Acer could just provide pinout mapping for the driver.

Alternatively we could attempt to change the driver to old alc255-acer. Even I'm not willing to do that, easier to buy new new mic.
