[SOLVED] Kernel Panic on HP Compaq dc5800 Small Form Factor PC

Now, you more than likely need the actual kernel panic verbose output, and when I have access to the computer I will get it but in the meantime I will tell what happens, any mint 19 (or any Linux distro based on Ubuntu 18.04 for that matter) will kernel panic upon trying to start the live system, vary early in the boot too, I need to use this system due to lack of space for a full desktop, if anyone can recommend a better system of the same physical dimensions as the Compaq under $100 I'm open for suggestions but if possible I would like to try and work with this one for now at least, anyway is there anything I need to get before I start trouble shooting???

You should post the text output in inxi -Fxz in the terminal, but a quick search tellls me that model came out over 10 years ago.

There's been a lot of deprecating of old hardware in Ubuntu 18.04, Mint 19, and all other Linux distros as recent as those. It isn't the fault of Mint or Ubuntu or any other distro, this is happening at the Linux Kernel Project. So all distros are affected.

My suggestion would be to back up your data and install Mint 18.3, which should work (you'll find out when you boot the live CD). It still has years of support left. Then if there does turn out to be a way to get 19 working at least you'll have a working Mint system to go by.

I have an old HP Compaq DC7800P Small Form Factor on the self that was a donaction. It runs Win7 and I use it as a backup when needed.

I tested a Live-Flash of Mint 19 Cinnamon and it booted OK. Here's the Terminal output of inxi -Fxz, so you can compare with your similar era system.

No kernel panic.

I would recommend you test the memory using the Memtest86+ on the Live drive.

I'm running a 2011 BIOS release, which I purposely updated too for known problems with the original BIOS back when I got the system around 2014/15.

Other than that, slight differences in Chipset Q35 vs Q33 and processor model E8300 vs E8400.

If memory is good, you might look for BIOS update.

The BIOS update fixed it! thanks for all the help, I would not have thought at first that the BIOS could affect that kind of thing, but I guess it makes sense once you think about it, Still strange though..... oh well as long as it works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HP Compaq dc5800 Microtower PC..........Same problem here: Kernel panic when trying to install 19,.1,.2,.3 Have tried DVD, USB methods. Updating Bios didn't work for me. The only thing that worked was Mint 18.3.
