Occasional freezing

Post by Omega Dark Mage »

I love using Linux Mint and have even streamed games with obs using this amazing operating system since I can't stand Windows and it's terrible update system. However I've been having freezes randomly and I lose control of both the keyboard and mouse so I end up having to power off the PC with the power button which I'd like to avoid doing if possible. I have an RX570 graphics card (which is being reported as an RX470 for some reason but I don't mind) and a Ryzen 7 1700x processor if that helps with knowing the cause since it could be hardware related but I'm not sure, also I'm running the latest kernel which is 4.20 I believe.

the latest kernel is 4.19 as from the other night. 4.20 is ukuu which is not supported yet. I in turn also run 4.20 without any problems which i run on my systems. As to freezing problems, it could be any number of things, from software to hardware.
Maybe in Terminal if you did a inxi -Fxzd and post the results so others more experienced than myself can help.

Check your motherboard for BIOS setting "PSU Idle Control" and change it to "Typical Current Idle". That definitely helps one type of Ryzen freeze problem.

If that doesn't help, need more on the system. Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results.

Code: Select all

When the system freezes, try to wait for at least 10 seconds, if possible until you HDD-LED (drive activity LED on the enclosure) stops indicating activity and then power down or reset. When you boot up again, examine the file /var/log/syslog and see if there are any indications of what caused the system to freeze (*). Also note, that if you wait with the reset / power down until there is no more drive activity, the risk of data loss or file system corruption is very small - I have a Ryzen 2400G system my self, so I know all about it!:-P

* Usually the first entry in the syslog when booting is something like "systemd-modules-load[xxx]: Inserted module 'lp'", and you need to look at the messages just prior to that.

i can't see any problems there, but then again i'm not that experienced with tech stuff, but if you first try what CixTrix suggested, and if it still persists then try what fungus suggested, i know by following their suggestions, they seem to fix a lot of other users problems. I'm just an old fogey that's had enuff of windozand trying to learn linux, which is great but the oll grey cells they don't absorb much info like it used to do.
hope you get it sorted out.

Re: Occasional freezing

So I haven't had my system freeze up these last few days, all I did was change a setting in my bios called attempt legacy boot to enable, not sure what this was for since my system was already booting with the legacy method and not UEFI. Not sure if this was a fix or if it's just luck that my system hasn't frozen again or perhaps a random update fixed my system.
