SOLVED: cryptsetup on USB hard drive

Post by petedecember »

Greetings--
I just got a brand new 4Tb USB external hard drive. I would like to encrypt it somehow, perhaps with the same cryptsetup as my LM 19 laptop? I would like it to work seamlessly with my laptop, but my laptop will not be connected to it 100% of the time. I don't plan on hooking it up to any other computers than this laptop. This drive is totally empty so we are starting with a clean slate and do not need to worry about encrypting or saving any data. What do you suggest?
Thanks in advance.

Hi petedecember,

There are various options for doing this. One of the easiest is to use the "Disks" application (gnome-disk-utility).

"VeraCrypt" is another excellent option. FYI: There is also an easy PPA installation option for VeraCrypt in the 2nd link below.

The guys that recently wrote a pretty damning paper on Samsung and Crucial hardware encryption (and Bitlocker to a lesser extent for using the hardware encryption by default) also recommend VeraCrypt.

I guess they know what they are talking about! It's what I plan to use on the external drive I plan on buying.

Thanks for the help!

I used the "Disks" application (gnome-disk-utility), AKA the easy way, and it worked perfectly. I think that I am going to encrypt my thumb drive next!
