Canon Pixma MX300 scanner in Gloria [SOLVED]

Post by Eesaurus » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:50 am

Is there any chance to get the Canon Pixma MX300 scanner working in Gloria? I bought that exact machine because it was in "works perfectly in Linux" -category in the OpenPrinting -web site. And i did get it working with the Canon Pixma MP 150 -driver. It prints, copies etc., but won't scan. I have these instructions, but i don't understand them enough. http://mp610.blogspot.com/2008/04/give- ... 0853577523

I know how to use terminal, but some of the details in the instructions above are too much for me. If they're my only chance to get the scanner working, i really appreciate any help to understanding them.

May I come back to you in a couple of days - we have a heatwave and I'm clearly affected by it - not thinking well....

Hot - I'm pouring with sweat and my main computer (this one) gets a heat stroke every now and then and that at 10 pm!

Hey Eesaurus; if we let Husse enjoy a few beers on a hot Swedish day:

if you type
sane-find-scanner -q
into a terminal, and
scanimage -L
also and post the results back here

Yep, let's do that.

It looks like this:

esa@esa-desktop ~ $ sane-find-scanner -q
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1727 [MX300 series]) at libusb:001:004

and

esa@esa-desktop ~ $ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname ASUS P7131 4871 virtual device
esa@esa-desktop ~ $

I'd be grateful if pdc_2 could carry on
It's a warm normal cloudy summers day to day - temperature in my office 25 C not above 30 as it has been some time now
But I tell you this looks strange
esa@esa-desktop ~ $ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname ASUS P7131 4871 virtual device
Seems it found a TV card?
I get
$ sane-find-scanner -q
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04f9, product=0x0182) at libusb:001:005
$ scanimage -L
device `brother2:bus1;dev1' is a Brother DCP-7010 USB scanner
This is what we'd expect - for you it should have said a Canon USB scanner
Not sure what to do about it though - you could always try to deactivate the ASUS card

Yes, it seems to be a tv-card, googled it. Pretty strange.

How to deactivate it? I don't use pc as a television, so i could live without the card i guess.

Assuming that it is a desktop - and for some laptops - you could remove the card
If you don't use it it only uses up resources and obviously interferes with other things
Always be careful and make sure you don't harm anything with static electricity - if you don't have a bracelet one hand on the chassis all the time....
This has turned into a rather large support topic of its own so I split it from the advisory topic it was added to in the beginning

Yes, it's a desktop. Ok, i might remove the card, but i guess i'll wait for the pdc_2's reply first. No hurry with the scanner. Printer is a main thing to me and it works nice.

Oh, every time when i turn the printer on, Mint says it doesn't have a driver and opens many windows where are these options etc... I have allready chosen a driver for the machine and it works with it, alltough that driver wasn't exactly for this MX300 model, but it works anyway with it. I guess Mint doesn't understand the "false" driver. Is there a way to turn off those "driver pop ups"?

I don't experience that when I use a "false" driver for my printer
I thought they only opened if there was no driver - check that you really have chosen a driver....

It could be the %20 in the name that makes it - try to use only MX300 or MX300 series (%20 is the code used in a URL for one space)
From Estonia? or Finland....

Ok, i'll try that.

I'm just a couple of hundred kilometers east from you, Finland. It's been quite chilly here lately, no heat wave at all. :( I'd like that you know...heat wave. :wink:

Hi Eesaurus;

the two commands I gave you:
sane-find-scanner -q should discover the scanner no matter who runs it
scanimage -L can only access the scanner if it has permission;

seems you have the usual permissions issue of scanners in linux;

for your canon scanner; Vendor ID is 0x04a9 [Canon], product ID = 0x1727

your current placement is 001:004

I need to find the howto; ........... will have a hunt ...........

try a temporary fix:
lsusb
to see the scanner is still at 001:004 if so

(try copy and paste)
sudo chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/001/004
(enter your sudo password when asked)

then open xsane and hopefully xsane will see the scanner;

if that works, MODE should = "0660" (whereas it is probably MODE = "0666")

Hi there!

I didn't understand all the things you said, but when i did lsusb in the terminal, it gave this:

esa@esa-desktop ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 04a9:1727 Canon, Inc. MX300 ser
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 058f:9360 Alcor Micro Corp. 8-in-1 Media Card Reader
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 03f0:0b0c Hewlett-Packard
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

And Husse, my printer preferences looks like this now,
Image

still out comes them "no driver" -pop ups...

EDIT: Had to change the original url back anyway, because the printer wouldn't print with those changes in the preferences. Pop ups+working printer is much better than pop ups and non working printer. :D

I started on a reply but it disappeared
I have added a (the?) solution for Gloria in the "scanner topic"
In your case the scanner/printer now seems to be at Bus 001 Device 006
You could try what pdc_2 recommends

Code: Select all

sudo chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/001/006
Of course 006
Now start xsane and see if you get it working

Terminal says there is no such file or directory, when i give this:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod a+rw /dev/bus/usb/001/006
I also removed tv-card from my machine, but Xsane still didn't find the scanner.

And

Code: Select all

scanimage -L
gives this:

Code: Select all

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
