[SOLVED] SDXC UHS-I Card not recognised in Mint 19.1 64bit

I'm on Linux Mint 19.1 64bit, kernel 4.15.0-45.
I'm trying my 128GB SDcard on Mint but it's not recognised.
I'm a complete noob, and I've no idea what's happening and how to solve it.

The card in question is:
SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card

SOLUTION:
Get a USB multi-format card reader and the card will get recognised.

I bought this card.

Works like a charm.

Booting multiple OS from the SD card is also supported in legacy mode.

It could be that the card is using the "extFat" filesystem format, so go into the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" and search for "exfat" and install exfat-fuse and exfat-utils and "udftools" and restart the computer. Then, retry accessing the card again.

I'm sorry, I'm such a dunderhead, how did I forget to mention that?
Yes, it's exFAT, that was by default.
go into the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" and search for "exfat" and install exfat-fuse and exfat-utils and "udftools" and restart the computer. Then, retry accessing the card again.
I followed this and I found "exfat-fuse" and" exfat-utils" already installed, is that normal?
So, I installed "udftools" and restarted my computer, but SD card was still not recognised. :(
Should I reinstall "exfat-fuse" and" exfat-utils" or something?

New findings.
I reformatted the card into NTFS format, still didn't detect whereas a 2TB external HDD (NTFS formatted one) works fine.
The card also works on a Windows 7 machine (which I planning to switch to Mint soon).
I've no idea if the problem is with the card or my install of Mint.
Could it be I messed up exFAT fuse or something for it was preinstalled?
Could it be a problem with the card reader, I checked another card, 16GB FAT32, it worked fine.
Any insight will help me a lot.

It's the internal card reader, and I've no idea how to find any info about it, I'm quite new to Linux.
Is there a command or two I could use to grab any more info about the internal card reader?

If it's a card reader's limitation, that's a hardware controller limit, not a Linux problem. You'd need to check the specifications of the laptop. Not saying that's the problem, just something that needs checking.

The kernel log might also give a clue. Trying plugging in the card after a fresh boot of the system and run the following command from Terminal and post back the results.

I don't see the card detected in dmesg, at least not giving any indication of USB activity for the card. I do see two odd acpi (power management) errors....and maybe they are related to the action of inserting the card.

If you reboot the system and don't insert the card, do those errors repeat? If not and you do subsequently insert the card, does that produce those errors?

I did find reference to an old kernel bug at Ubuntu around this error.

Yes, after I rebooted the machine, the errors did repeat without inserting the card.

However, the above error only shows up after inserting the card and stops repeating after I take out the card.

I edited my prior post on what I discovered on ucsi_acpi.

There is a newer Ubuntu kernel, 4.18.0-15 in Update Manger. I would try that kernel and see if the problem remains.

To install, bring up Update Manager and select "View" from the menu bar at top. You should see a selection for "Linux kernels" in the drop-down list. Select the 4.18.0-15 kernel and you should see an Install button. That will install that kernel. To activate, just reboot. To check it's running use the inxi -Fxz command from Terminal.

As everyone is stating or suggesting, it could be the internal microSD reader of your computer may not support that type of microSD card or its larger size capacity (128gb).

You might consider getting a USB microSD adapter that is known to work with the type of microSD card and its capacity and see if that works.

If you have a problem with the newer kernel, you can always fall-back to the prior kernel from the Grub boot menu. That's the safe fall-back you always have with any new kernel.

Also....I was thinking you had a USB card reader. I looked at your older post more closely and spotted this Realtek Card Reader as a PCI bus device ....

Thanks, I updated the kernel to 4.18.0-15-generic.
It was so easy, and switching kernels is way easier, I was worried for nothing.
Sadly, the errors do show up again and card isn't recognised. :(

Yes, it's an internal one, not a USB one, though if there are internal USB SD card readers then I really don't know.

Just google "RTS552A" and "bug" and you'll get a whole lot of reports of problems.
They're talking about updating the kernel, I did update the kernel and it still didn't work (though my Wacom CTL-6100WL is now working over bluetooth, only worked over USB previously).

And there's no concrete solution for this I could find, there are others like me who even after updating kernel couldn't connect their cards.
And, this bug is so old and it's still thriving.
And I had to purchase a SanDisk, I'm such a dunderhead.
For future, is there any place where I could ask people of the hardwares I could purchase to have max compatibility with my Mint install?
And do you know of any possible solution for this?

Hi Mintymandy34,

I would highly recommend that you get a USB microSD card adapter like the ones I recommended that are known to work with that type of microSD card and it's larger capacity. Some are only around $10us and are available from Amazon.com, local business supply stores, electronics stores, maybe even drug stores and dept. stores. With all the devices that use microSD cards nowadays, it would be convenient to have one of these USB microSD card adapters anyway, and you can use them with other computers and devices.

I'm seeing a lot of reports that might suggest the bug started with kernel 4.15. I checked at the kernel.org bugzilla and didn't find a match. I'm only finding old errors (so far) at Ubuntu.

Mint is based upon Ubuntu, which takes mainline kernels from kernel.org and makes their own kernels (those you find in Update Manager). They would be the most likely place to find a bug report for a bug they introduced or at least have kinship to something changed from mainline changes. The report I see filed at MMC is from a Ubuntu 18.04 and the current 4.15.0-45 kernel. However, I'm seeing reports of this bug on other distros that have no relationship to Ubuntu kernels.

Bad news....it takes time to recognize and fix bugs like this.

Switching to USB isn't a bad idea for now.

Avoiding problems with linux? Well, I usually work with a friend/client to select a "mature" (more than a year on the market) product and will sometimes take a bootable flash drive with me to run some tests before purchase. That's not a guarantee, as problems happen including regression of old problems.

Here's a thought. On the premise that this is a latent bug from a newer kernel, you might try creating a bootable Mint 18.3 flash drive and boot that edition for a live test and see if the MMC drive works. I believe that shipped with kernel 4.10.
