[SOLVED] AMD Radeon graphics on mint 19.1 mate

Post by blueredgreen »

Running mate 17.3 - updated it using update manager and it will not boot up now - a very long error message says xorg will not load because the fglrx driver will not load or is not there (This machine has an AMD radeon chip which is no longer being given drivers, but 17.3 graphics were fine until now using fglrx ... 19.1 mate on same machine still works fine but the videos tear a bit, which I can live with).

On 17.3 I can get logged in as super user but all that I know how to do there is shutdown -h now.

I was hoping to keep 17.3 and just use it for video playback after it reaches no support in April.

my system as per mint 19.1

Re: Update wiped out my graphics

Hello, blueredgreen.

It is a fact that the proprietary AMD driver fglrx was kast supported and maintained by AMD for Ubuntu 14.04 / Mint 17.x.
To be precise, AMD has never bothered to make the proprietary driver fglrx co-operate with the kernel series 4.4.0-xx or newer.
This is why on Mint 19.x you may be able to use the open source drivers only.

Best regards,
Karl

https://cubethethird.wordpress.com/2016 ... on-ubuntu/

The above link solved amd radeon graphics problems on linuxmint 19.1 mate.

VLC and Media Player are now working very well ... before VLC was watchable but had a bit of tearing and Media Player was not watchable at all.

I used the first config in the above link, did not need the second modified config.

Hi, blueredgreen.

Congratulations on finding the solution to your problem. :D
May I ask whether you only applied the option "TearFree" "On" parameter, or did you also turn on Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"?

Best regards,
Karl

thx karl

I used option "TearFree" "On"

The next day an update showed in update manager for X11 - I knew this was graphics related and originally planned not to apply any graphics or player updates on mint 19.1 after what happened to my mint 17.3 ... but then thought I would take the risk as it might help 19.1 last longer ... oops ... the X11 update reset VLC back to a bit of tearing and Media Player unwatchable.

I used timeshift (which I had never used before) to go back and timeshift did unapply the X11 update but it did not solve the video player problems ...

I reinput the option "TearFree" "On" back into the usr/share folder and rebooted and it fixed VLC but not Media Player, so I then tried Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" but it was the same so I just left it there.

So am now running with Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" ... VLC works very good and Media Player is unwatchable.

This is good enough for me as VLC is great ... hopefully I can get 2 or 3 years out of this machine and then replace it with an Intel.
