GeForce 6150 LE limited resolution with nVidia-304

Post by brvcf »

Mint 18.3 XFCE 64 kernel 4.15.0-45
Samsung 940bw 1440x900 monitor connected via VGA to
Dell Dimension E521, 23GB RAM, AMD Athlon64x2 4000+, nVidia GeForce 6150 LE graphics

With nVidia-304 version 304.135-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 driver I only get standard 4x3 VGA 1280x1024, 1024x768... resolution options

If I use xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.12-1build2 I get the proper 1440x900 resolution.

BUT the mouse pointer disappears after the computer returns from sleep.
ctrl-alt-F1 , F7 and all other tricks in various posts do not work to bring it back or stop it from happening in the first place.
This is a bug that has never been fixed and apparently is a graphics driver issue.

So I am hoping that by using the NVidia driver I can avoid it, but I need correct screen resolution.
tried various suggestions putting things in xorg.conf. did not work.

I recall conflict problems with the now depreciated legacy nVidia cards (required the nVidia 304 driver) and the 4.15 Kernel. I have such a system with an integrated GPU and hit this problem back last summer with both Mint 19 and with Mint 18.3 and the 4.15 Kernel. Here's a prior post with similar problem.

I would try the latest 4.4 LTS Kernel for a test.

Even though this is an old thread addressing resolution issues, I am posting an information update for anyone else who might have problems with this graphics adapter.

I wish I could say I found a solution but I have not.

I recently tried the latest nVidia 304 driver. It did not work.

I have read all kinds of posts about xrandr, manually adding resolutions, etc. and tried doing that. It did not work.

The main problem with the open source nouveau driver is that computer occasionally just locks up with a scrambled display.

I thought this might be bad RAM or power supply but I have changed/tested both and it still happens.

There was recently a post on https://www.facebook.com/groups/linuxmintmembers/with a scrambled display picture that might as well be my monitor when Mint locks up. Further reinforcing my conclusion that this is a driver issue.
