firepro v5900

Post by rube2112 »

Hi, Does anyone know of a way to get a better video driver for my firepro v5900? The windows driver will run circles arount the linux driver. I've tried the amd website and I can't get their driver to install. Most recent listed is 2015. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Robb

You need to post more system info to be sure ... copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots plz):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
However, if that card IS that, you aren't going to be able to get any other drivers for it. The open source driver (radeon) is it. Good thing you couldn't get any of those drivers you dl'ed to install, they almost surely would have broken the video. Getting the newest driver from the mfr's site is a Windows thing, not a good idea in Linux.

There has got to be a better driver choice. This same computer running windows will run circles around what its doing in mint. Its almost unuseable

Your only option is to use the last version of linux that the AMD driver supports if you want the full power of the graphic card. Once AMD stops supporting newer versions of linux your graphic card gets left behind and has to use the open source driver which is not as good because AMD does not allow access to all the features of the graphic card for security reasons. It's better just to get a newer graphic card that that still has linux support from AMD.
