Proprietary ATi drivers make system unusable

This is often a problem with proprietary drivers not being very well written. How did you install them? The recommended way is to use the "Hardware Drivers" app, in the admin menu, rather than any other way (I've seen people have problems with envyng for instance). On the other hand, if your system is perfectly fine without them enabled, why don't you just use the open-source ones that are enabled by default, if they make your comp run better.
