upgrading to m.2 nvme pcie ssd on older gigabyte motherboard

Post by marcia »

Hello Everyone,

I am strongly considering upgrading my older gigabyte version 1 AMD model: 990FXA-UD3 v: x.x
Bios: American Megatrends v: FA date: 10/23/2012 with a nvme2 pcie adapter and this nvme2
ssd drive: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... iption=xpg

and this m.2 nvme pcie adapter: ORICO M.2 NVME to PCI-E Adapter, M2 SSD to PCI-e 3.0 x4 Host Controller Expansion Card with Low Profile Bracket, Support M Key Solid State Drive

Does anyone have any experience with doing this? I have read some info about it and most who tried and got it to work, however, some said they had to upgrade the bios first. If anyone has any good info about it or suggestions I would love to hear about it. I plan to install LM 19.1 on it and boot
from the drive. Thank you.

You might discover that you can't boot from the NVME with that board. Here's an old post on that subject. Really depends on what your BIOS/UEFI allows.

If you look at my specs, I've been using NVME since I built the system back in early fall 2017. I use my NVME split for Mint 19.1 and a separate partition for VBox virtual machines.

Thank you for your help. It does not look promising at all. I guess I will be patient
and wait until I upgrade to ryzen motherboards in a year or so.

Thank you.
