No video with AMD Athlon 200GE

Post by aurumvorax » Wed Mar 20, 2019 5:01 pm

Hi there,

build myself a new pc with the following specs:

ASRock DeskMini A300
AMD Athlon 200GE
2x4 GB DDR4 RAM

I've tried to install the newest Linux Mint Cinnamon, sadly I got no signal from my monitor. Followed this instruction:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1112316 ... 17#1112317

Installation went fine with the new parameters, still got no video after reboot though. Installed new kernel as instructed, problem persists however.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards

If you have nvidia
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... a.html?m=1
Following terminal command can find if you have nvidia

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxz
Also paste output of the command in code tags here.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

I am using Mint 19.2 Cinnamon 64 bit with AMD A8/7410 processor . Memory 8GB

This is a problem with the current Kernel used with stock Mint.

It doesn't support the CPU/GPU combo. I actually just installed Ubuntu and then shifted my desktop to Cinnamon. There doesn't seem to be a way to actually install Mint with the 200GE at the moment, as you can't actually see the screen.

I tried a bunch of different things, but I didn't want to bother trying to upgrade the kernel during install.

Hi, is this issue resolved or not?

I have almost similar hardware and really want to know if video driver can run correctly in Asrock a300 before install LM 19.1.

I am successfully running Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon on an ASRock DeskMini A300 with an Athlon 220GE (so it should work with the 200GE as well).

First, follow Catweazel's link and boot your install media with the nomodeset option:
This should allow you to boot graphically and then install as normal.

Once everything is installed, you have to use the same nomodeset trick in order to avoid the black screen. You can do this manually when you boot by pressing "e" and changing "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" like with the install media. Or, you can edit the /etc/default/grub file to change it permanently.

I changed the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to read:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
Don't forget to run

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
to lock in that change.

This solution, however, still runs in software rendering mode, which is not ideal. The only fix I have found for Mint Cinnamon involves installing a custom kernel, which I have no interest in. I have heard that the Athlon 2xxGE series works better running on xfce than cinnamon, but I have not yet tried it myself.

As an addendum to my previous post, updating to kernel 5.0.0-15 through the Update Manager appears to resolve the issue entirely.

It is still necessary to use the "nomodeset" process when booting from the install media and the first time booting after install. However, at that point, installing the updated kernel now allows me to reboot without "nomodeset" (I changed it back to "quiet splash"), and I am no longer in software rendering mode.

Don't know what new issues this kernel may introduce, but this, at least, appears to be fixed on my system.

I can confirm that using kernel 5.xx works for me too.

Mine is ryzen 2400g though, the only strange thing is, LM recognised vga driver as Vega 8.

Hi there,

I built a new pc with the following specs:

MSI B350 VH PRO PLUS
AMD RYZEN (with Radeon™ Vega 8 Graphics)
1x4 GB DDR4 RAM

I installed Linux Mint 19.0 from USB pen drive, sadly I got no signal from my monitor (i'm using a old one 16 inches, connected by VGA analog)

After a few tweaks I figured out how to boot system, thought compability mode. Before booting it informes that video card's driver wont be loadded ... then i start dig for a solution

I did a few changes:
1. updated my kernel from 4.10 to 4.15

2. updated the whole system (# apt-get update && # apt-get dist-upgrade)

3. updated my BIOS to MSI 7B07v2F1 released (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... RO-VH-PLUS)

What is my next step??

Thanks, I didn't read your reply earlier, it would save my time. Anyway, here goes my step by step solution, after weekend of trials.

LM 19

First is necesery explain how i figure out the USB installation process...

After change BIOS to legacy and set my USB to first boot choice, i could not start LM 19 throught USB simply choosing standar option at GRUB screen (this path led me to black screen and blinking mnonitor) so i moved down to "Advanced options for Linux Mint" and hitted enter to advance for a new screen, where i choosed "compability mode", witch loaded LM 19 without drivers. For more details about this issue see link bellow:
:?: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... tions.html

Kernek 5
LM 19 comes with kernel 4.10, so it's necessary to update for kernel 5 (4.22). It very easy to do accomplish this so i won't explain it here, just search, there are plenty of pages, videos, etc, about it.

Mesa 19
Default Mesa at kernel 5.0.0-15-generic is Mesa 18.2.8. Checked by command bellow at terminal:

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
So there is time to OIBAF ppa:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

GRUB
It wassn't necessary the extra step
and then an extra step for amdgpu ONLY (vega8) is edit: /etc/default/grub

Can you explain detailed why it is necessary?
Thanks in advance.

I am using AMD 220GE with Asrock A320m with Mint 19.1, however non of the mentioned steps did not do the trick, still need to use "nomodeset" in order to boot. Steps I have done:
1. Updated kernel to 5.x using UKUU
2. Installed oibaf video drivers (Mesa 19)
3. Updated all the packages and did dist-upgrade

Does anyone still have this problem like me?

Good afternoon everybody,

i am planning to switch to LM.
As far as i understood that thread, the AMG Athlon 200 GE works after doing some modifications.
Before i do that i want to secure, that the processor, the videocard and the internal HDD will work.

I use the following specifications:
-AMD Athlon 200GE
-Radeon RX 480 8GB
-Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD M.2 2280 1TB

Kind regards

Hi kl376 ,
what you need to do, is download the ISO from:
https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
and then write that ISO to either an DVD or to an usb stick,
& then run the Live LinuxMint Media in order to ascertain that All of your PCs hardware does actually work A.ok.
