Hi I need some help to get my new Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 OC card recognised in Linux Mint 18.01. I booted up Mint after installing the card and everything seemed normal except I got a pop-up message saying there was an error with the drivers and that "Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration". I can't run the Gigabyte driver software cd so I tried downloading a linux driver, for this card, from Nvidia but I can't open the download file to install it.
Nvidia website said to run the following command as Root to install the driver-
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.20.run
but Terminal says it can't open the file.
I'm fairly naive at installing downloaded packages and files in Linux and don't know much about it so I'd be grateful of some guidance please.

That's rather fortunate. Run the driver manager from the Mint menu.

I've tried using Mint's Driver Manager but is seems very limited as to what it will let you do. I can't see how I can use it to install or update drivers. Here's an image of what it shows after updating the cache.

Perhaps you could explain what it is meant to actually do.

I looked at your pic . . Is there a reason you want to install an OLDER version of Nvidia driver?
Installed: 384

Oops! Well, the main reason I guess is because I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks and not making a good show of it. I keep dabbling in things I know nothing about and all I get out of it in the end is a big headache from all the reading. I really like using Linux Mint, and hope one day to to be able to free myself from Microsoft's chains, but the learning curve is pretty steep for an old codger, especially in regard to downloading and installing packages. I get mighty confused about doing that.

I managed to upgrade to nvidia 390 by following the instructions on this website -
https://mintguide.org/system/856-instal ... -mint.html
After that I opened my mint Driver Manager and after updating the cache it now shows the following drivers are installed. I am running on the top one at present and everything seems to be ok.

My thanks to all, much obliged.
