Mini CD

Postby paranich » Sun Jul 12, 2009 11:35 am

I use a 4 megapixel Mavica camera, which still uses the mini cds. I can conncet the camera to my computer to download the photos via usb, but I can't get Mint to recognize the Mini cd in either my cd or cd/dvd drive, in any of the 3 computers I'm using with Mint. A Dell XPS 400, an old Gateway (8 years old) or a Compaq Presario laptop. Anyone have any ideas?

First of all the mini CD needs to be properly finalized before it can be read as a valid filesystem. Did you do that?
Secondly try mounting the CD manually with:

sudo mkdir /mnt/cdrom
sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Then browse to the folder /mnt/cdrom and see if you can access the photos.
If that does not work, remove the mini CD from the drive, open a terminal, type "tail -f /var/log/messages", then insert the CD and show us the output from the terminal logs that you then see in the terminal.

Yes, I have the disks finalized, I actually have about 100 of these disks I'm moving to a drive for storage.

sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
gave me "mount: No medium found" message

here is the log after I insterted the cd:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Yes, you can see from the log that the kernel cannot read the disc, it reports a "Medium Error". I don't know of a solution for you - but I would put that entire error line into Google and see if you can find a solution.

Try this command instead of the one I posted above:
sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

That mounted the cd, I was able to read and copy from it, but it wouldn't let me unmount it, or eject the volume.

Great! We're getting somewhere! Before you can umount ANY device, it cannot be "in use". That means you cannot even be in that directory. So get out of the /mnt/cdrom directory (or whatever) and then and only then issue the command "umount /mnt/cdrom".

worked perfect, much faster then downloading them from the camera, thank you. I'll still poke around with the error log to try to figure out why it won'd recgonize it as a normal cd.
