SOLVED. What is the cheapest USB Webcam for Mint 19.2 ? Low quality is fine.

Post by SausageCreature » Sat Aug 31, 2019 3:51 am

Hello all,
so, having had a look through the forum, I see there are a quite a few people who have encountered snags when wanting to use a webcam, often this is related to taking pics with Cheese, or similar. I've tried googling, tried searching Amazon/ebay. Most of the ones that say they support Linux are £15 upwards. A lot of the ones on ebay look like they are box brownie type things too.. weird.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... m&_sacat=0

All I want, is a cheap low quality webcam for Skype/Zoom et al. based job interviews. Ideally less than £5, plugs into a USB on my HP Elite book and works. It wont be used for anything else, ever, ha. Last words eh?

I found this list of supported devices:
http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/

Matching the internal tech and chipset to an Amazon listing, at the right price point seems overly laborious and you know what i thought? Someone must have found a cheap USB webcam that works before me, so let's ask the community.

Any ideas folks ?
Thanks
Sausage.

Having read the following :

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams

This might be amongst my simplest and cheapest options.

Or is there something way better that i am missing out on ?

Thanks
Sausage.

Hi SausageCreature,

Most Logitech webcams work well in Linux. The Logitech C270 is a nice low-cost webcam that works in Linux and is "plug-n-play" requiring no drivers to work. Most local electronic stores like Best Buy, certain department stores, business supply stores, around here some drug stores will also have webcams that will work with Linux.

You can search places like Amazon.com and Ebay for "webcam Linux". Read the product descriptions and user comments.

Hope this helps ...

The typo in the title is a bit misleading.

What you can do if you have an old laptop is take the cam out of it and splice it into a USB cable. :)

Ive done that for all kinds of stuff. Its an idea you might entertain. Instead of that old laptop sitting in the closet or basement collecting dust you can use the cam out it. :)

I have a Logitech C170 and a C270 and both work fine with Mint.

HI Coffee,
sounds like the kind of thing I have to do with my land rover ;) I had to splice a £4 ebay camera into the rear parking camera housing. It was better than the £500 land rover wanted for a replacement camera! Unfortunately the old laptop was recycled last week.

Hi Jenny, thanks for the confidence boost. Logitech now ordered.

Really appreciative of all the help. Thanks.
Mark

The cheap logitech quickcam pro 3000 plugged in and worked with out any fettling required. It worked with Skype and with Zoom conference. Resolution is low, but i knew that was a limitation of the camera when I bought it. It will probably be used only for job interviews.
Thanks for your help.
