plug in new usb device crashes all usb ports

Post by stevang » Tue Sep 03, 2019 2:49 pm

this is not happening every single time, but when it happens it is super annoying.
lets say i plugin a usb device, like a handscanner for barcodes or yubikey or something, it happens every now and then that all usb ports are crashing. USB-Mouse and -Keyboard dont work anymore, but the PC is still running.
Since it takes around 2-3 seconds until the mouse etc freezes, i would say it is more likely to be a software problem!?
As a workaround i then login remotely via VNC and restart Linux.

Any idea what i can do about that?

Thanks,
Stephan

This is most probably a hardware problem.

I have one computer, where the same thing happens - if a certain combinations of USB devices are connected to the same USB hub at the same time.

So here is what you must do: Every time this happens, take notice on where each usb unit is (on what usb port and hub). Try to swap positions and see if that helps.
So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

before i go buying a internal pci-e usb card, i gonna reduce the load.
so i removed a chipcard reader, hard drive and usb-hub to see if it was just a little to much for the power capabilities of cheap mainboards usb2 ports. so far, it looks promising.

That might be your problem, MSI 760GM-P23 (FX) only has USB2 and an unpowered USB hub could easily overload the 500mA USB2 bus. If you are planning on using a lot of USB accessories on a USB hub, use a powered USB hub. FYI, each group of 2 USB ports share the same USB connector, so the 500mA rating is per group of 2 ports and not per port.

I had a similar problem.
The way I got round it was by installing a pci-e USB3 card - 2USB-A (internal)/2ext.
Found an adaptor on fleabay from China that was female usb2 header to male USB A and plugged that into the USB3 card.
It works really well and the USB2 devices are running at faster than USB2 speed.
And this was how I saved my Akasa multi-card reader from being executed.

Now i have installed a 4port usb3 card with power internally from sata power connector. Also attached a 4 port usb3 powered hub to it.
disabled the internal usb2 ports in bios settings completely.

and still, i get crashes of all usb ports. cant move the mouse or type on the keyboard, when pluggin into a usb3 port or removing something from it.

it feels a little like a software problem now..

Try updating to the latest BIOS, there are several updates released since 11/2012. Link to updates and youtube tutorial to flashing with M-flash:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/760GM-P23-FX

Edit: Are you overclocking? And what is the size/make of your PSU?
