Questions about hardware,drivers and peripherals

I found an open source driver on Github for a synthesizer I own, the driver is for controlling MIDI input and output data. It sounds like it should be relatively straightforward to get up and running based on the developers included notes, however it lacks a clear "step 1 do this, step 2 do that" instruction set that my newbie brain needs to get this thing going.
