VIA Nano CPU and VIA Onboard Graphics

Post by Mr_Reed » Thu Sep 05, 2019 5:11 pm

Is there a place where I can confirm support for a VIA Nano processor and the associated VIA onboard graphics?
The processor seems to be fairly modern as it is a 64 bit unit, and the motherboard is supposed to be Win 8 and 10 compatible.

In the past, I have tried to use LM with VIA C7 and wasn't real impressed with the performance. And I'm not sure of the status on whether or not Linux Mint supports the onboard VIA graphics. I believe it is a chrome driver or something.

best way is to test it install Linux Mint on USB, install has a live version to try. here is a guide how to do it. http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/how- ... t-from-usb

I hope this helps.
Regards, Lex
I don't own it yet, so I can't test drive it.

VIA Linux support was never good and the most recent thing I can find ain't encouraging:

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... 019-Atomic

This is a kernel issue and therefore Mint isn't going to be any better or worse than any other Linux distro. BTW a CPU isn't remotely modern just because it's 64 bit.

Hello Mr_Reed,

it is easier to look for possible linux support, if you could name a computer model or the processor and graphic card.

Well to be more specific I am asking about the VIA Nano L2007 that is included on this http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/motherboard ... MVB-VX9GSM

The chipset is the VX900 with integrated video VIA Chrome9 HD DX9 3D engines sharing up to 512 of RAM.

Hello Mr_Reed,

it is really hard to find any informations to VX900 relatedt to Linux/Ubuntu. I found one Computer in the database with that Chrome9 HD. It is on a HP Thin Client with Ubuntu Core 18 as the OS:

https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?probe=7265640cdc

It is a very actuak probe, so that you can see, that it is running on actual linux systems with the default kernel of LM 19.x (LM is based on Ubuntu). Here you find a VX900 list of that database with other linux systems, too, without Chrome9 HD:

https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?vi ... VX900#list

I hope, that informations can help you a little bit going on.

Thanks that was somewhat helpful. So correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that the support for the hardware is there. I see things being listed as "detected" and "works".

Hello Mr_Reed,

yes, it seems to be supported. "detected" means, that the part isn't running during the test, but it is tested, that the needed drivers are there. When a driver is missing or another test function doesn't work properly, you would see "failed" as you can here see on my older Sony laptop with the fingerprint reader. Sometimes there a further hints to problem with hardware:

https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=119210cf69

Do you want to get a used computer? For that, I would recommend, that you have a bootable USB stick with your favourite linux OS anf try it out before buying. But if you know the model name, you can have a look in the database, if there are probes for it (or you write it here and I'll have a look, what can be found).

I'd also be interested in this http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb ... p?S_ID=953
but I can't find it anywhere. Not sure why as it is not really new either.

Hello Mr_Reed,

there is one probe for this motherboard in the database and it looks okay. If you only want to look of a part of a computer, you have to take the "Find Parts" link, but sometimes, you have to varify your search a little bit to find it :) :
