USB 3 SSD enclosure not working. JMicron 152d:0562

USB 3 SSD enclosure not working. USB chip is JMicron 152d:0578

I ran into another JMicron USB chip problem. This time the chip id is 152d:0562. There is at least one report of this chip working in kernel 4.12 but not in 4.14.

Half the time the USB chip is recognised but reports that the device does not contain a disk.

When it starts up successfully, it gives the occasional g-io-error-quark, 0

Code: Select all

kernel: [ 2197.207644] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
kernel: [ 2197.207702] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]
kernel: [ 2197.207713] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 ASC=0x44 <<vendor>>ASCQ=0x81
kernel: [ 2197.207723] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00
kernel: [ 2197.207731] print_req_error: critical target error, dev sdb, sector 0
kernel: [ 2197.209461] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Unit Not Ready
There are dozens of reports of errors with JMicron chips in the family conatining this chip. There are hundreds of USB disk error reports that do not mention the chip id. The very first response to a USB 3 error should be a request for the chip id. The reports go as far as Redhat and as far back as 2016.
