Advice needed: RAID - mdadm - dual boot (ish)

Post by SomeDudeInAZ » Tue Oct 01, 2019 3:25 pm

Hi Folks,

At some point I plan on setting up a simple RAID 1 (mirroring) on my data drive (NOT my OS/home partition).

Generally I keep all my data on a separate drive rather than anything "local". So my home & OS share the same partition.

BUT I have multiple OS partitions. So I'll have a bunch of distros for playing and work and whatnot. LM Cinnamon, LMDE, and Peppermint (for instance).

Can I set up a software raid using mdadm where they can all work with the same drive setup? Do I have to run mdadm on all installs? And would that break the raid for the others?

Anyone play with this before?

Thanks for the advice

Generally there should be no problems with mdadm across distros.

However there is a possibility of incompatibility if a feature was changed or modified between versions.

For example I'm dual booting 19.1 and 18.3.

I cannot run 18.3's fsck on 19.1's partition due to a feature that was added to 19.1's mkfs.ext4.

So I would first check the mdadm versions accross your intended distros.

Good luck
