Linux Mint 7 on Samsung N120

Postby Talexe » Wed Aug 12, 2009 5:27 am

I have recently bought the Samsung N120 as a light-use workstation for school and on trips. As I'm relatively new to Linux, I'm considering installing Linux Mint 7 as my OS, dual booting with Windows XP.

The Samsung N120 is a netbook with the following specifications:
* Genuine XP Home SP3
* Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6 GHz)
Graphics Graphic Memory 128 MB shared
Graphic Processor Intel 945GSE
* System Memory 1 GB DDR2 667 MHz
Maximum System Memory 1 GB DDR2 667 MHz
* LCD Technology 10.1-inch WSVGA 1024 x 600
* Multimedia Speakers 2 W (1 W x 2)
* Integrated Camera 1.3 megapixel
* Storage Hard Drive 160 GB, 2.5″, 5400 RPM
* Wired Ethernet LAN 10 / 100 BaseTX
Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g
Bluetooth Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
USB 2.0 x 3 USB (2 chargeable USB ports)
Multi Card Slot 3 in 1 (SD, SDHC, MMC)
RJ45 (LAN)
* Input Keyboard Type 82 keys
Touch Pad
* Security Kensington Key Lock Capable
* 6 cell battery lithium ion
* Dimensions (W XH XD) 10.27″ x 1.19″ x 7.3″
Weight (including battery) 1.3kg (2.8 lbs)

Is Linux Mint 7 likely to work very well out of the box on the Samsung N120? Will it need a bit of work, or will it be so problematic that it's best to look elsewhere? In particular, feedback from Samsung N120 owners would be very useful.

Thanks in advance!

As you probably aware Mint is based on Ubuntu. It is worth visiting the Ubuntu forum and entering Samsung N120 in the search. There is a considerable amount of info available concerning your machine.

Good Luck.

hi flintoff; welcome to the Mint forums;

if you are using Ubuntu, you might be best to join the Ubuntu forums;

and they will be very keen to know all about your computer; desktop? laptop?

if you post in a forum that is to do with connecting to the internet: a network forum; (or wireless forum);

and tell them how you intend to connect; eg ethernet cable; dial-up; 3G mobile broadband; wireless ..................
