Post by bardoawapap »

i'm building a pc with some older, used parts so i can get it cheap. i'm looking to have linux mint as my os because people say it is similar to windows 7 and i am transferring from that. i can't test it because i have yet to order the parts.

specs

processor: amd athlon x4 860k

mobo: gigabyte ga-f2a68hm-s1

ram: ddr3 8gb 2x4 kingston kvr16n11/4

storage: seagate barracuda 1tb hard drive

graphics card: radeon rx 460 2gb

if you guys don't know about these exact parts can u tell me how i can find out myself? google isn't really helping me, thanks dudes

Easy to check it out first.
Just boot to the live desktop from your install medium (hopefully it's a usb flash).
Try everything out there, if all seems ok open a terminal window from Menu or by Ctrl+Alt+T
then type or copy/paste the following:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
You could copy/paste those results back to this thread for scrutiny, but my best guess is you'll be good to go with that setup.
If things are working well at this point I would feel comfortable going for a full install. Are you planning on dual booting with Win?
Suggestion either way though: Back up all your personal files located on that entire drive and save them outside the box, just in case
something goes amiss along the way. Better to do this and not need as the other way around--this also reduces apprehension

I've loaded Linux on older stuff than that. Some of my work machines (i.e. only get used when I'm in a particular room) only get a work out rarely, though they are often on. They are running Celeron 2 processors and have XP license stickers on them. Surprisingly they run Cinnamon quite well, with 4Gb RAM and on board video.

Nobody has mentioned yet, that INTEL processors seem to have better Linux compatibility than AMD in general. Dont they? If you have a choice, choose Intel over Amd. Intel simply offers better support for Linux than Amd does. Does not mean that Linux could not run excellently on Amd processors. At all. But I am simply looking for the weakest link here....Or am I mistaken? This is my (newbie, forget my level 6) experience and the advice I got on this very forum. Intel simply is more reliable, than Amd. Right? Wrong?

carum carvi - This is incorrect if not backwards. I have many flavours of Linux running on everything from an Athlon XP to the Ryzen 7 3700x system I am using now and even 16 core Opteron processors, all quite well. I do find running Linux on older Celeron, Core 2 and pretty much any Atom is slow and altogether a futile effort.

bardoawapap - That hardware is perfectly acceptable to run Linux Mint. I have several very similar machines running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 and 19.
AMD Ryzen 3700x
MSI x470 Gaming Pro
1TB Crucial P1 NVMe
1TB Samsung 960 Pro NVMe
32GB DDR4 3200
Nvidia RTX2080 OC
-------------------------------------
Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon
Kernel 5.3.0-40
