[Solved] System freezing every now and then

My Lenovo Ideapad freezes every now and then. Sometimes after a few days, sometimes after a few hours. Keyboard does not work, touchpad does not work. Only power off button helps.

Now this time I had a look at /var/log/syslog and found these lines repeated many times before the hard reboot:

Code: Select all

Apr 13 17:28:06 ideapad kernel: [207091.422937] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: VM_L2_PROTECTION_FAULT_STATUS:0x00701031

Apr 13 17:28:06 ideapad kernel: [207091.423019] amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: in page starting at address 0x0000800102788000 from 27
and a few of these:

Code: Select all

Apr 13 17:28:10 ideapad kernel: [207091.506958] [drm:amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Waiting for fences timed out or interrupted!
Apr 13 17:28:10 ideapad kernel: [207096.426582] gmc_v9_0_process_interrupt: 58452 callbacks suppressed
Something to do with the built-in graphics?

Code: Select all

Try installing latest version of kernel series 5.6, reboot and test. ukuu will let you install it.

OK, I installed kernel 5.6.4 with Ukuu. Installation went without problems, except for a bunch of messages about possible missing firmware for various adm graphics chips/cards.
Let's see how it goes.

Don't use UKUU kernels:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... ml#ID6.3.2
(item 6.3.2)

Remove the UKUU kernel and just wait for the 5.4.x kernel to appear in the official repo's (won't be long). In the meantime, disable all visual effects in Cinnamon as emergency measure:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID5.1
(item 5.1)

You might also try this (but take a Timeshift snapshot first):

Thanks Pjotr, actually I had just rebooted with the 5.3 kernel because the 5.6 made the screen go totally crazy.

I followed all "disable visual effects" steps. And actually I've been using oibaf PPA for some time already.

Let's see if the visual effect removal helps. Switching to "traditional" from "modern" is a bit disappointing visually, though.
Cinnamon had problems with Applets:

Code: Select all

error t=2020-04-14T16:39:42Z
[xapp-status@cinnamon.org]: XApp.StatusIconMonitor is not a constructor
[xapp-status@cinnamon.org]: Failed to evaluate 'main' function on applet: xapp-status@cinnamon.org/34
error t=2020-04-14T16:39:42Z
[xapp-status@cinnamon.org]: Applet xapp-status@cinnamon.org: Could not create applet object.
[xapp-status@cinnamon.org]: Error importing applet.js from xapp-status@cinnamon.org
I have a slight hunch that the "live updates" page of theguardian.com is one posing problems. https://frama.link/HLtte-QB
Or exposing, actually. Is it Cinnamon or my hardware?

Ssd or hd? Age of them?

NVMe, as shown in the inxi output. Bought this laptop last year in February.

I'm having freezes too. Complete lock-ups. The mouse pointer doesn't move. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work. Sound starts repeating the same thing over and over again. No SysRq combinations work.

The only thing that works, is to hold down the power button until (maybe 10 seconds) the computer shuts down. I have a DELL Precision M6600 laptop.

How can I begin to narrow down the cause of this problem? I've tried "journalctl -r" and there seems to be nothing in the log that points to the error.

I've done complete memory testing using 2 different tools (one of them built into the BIOS), and there were no problems detected.

I am at a loss here.

Cheers,
Albert.

That's precisely the behaviour I have had.

To close this issue: the recently available kernel 5.4 seems to have solved this problem of freezing for me.
Installed 4 days ago and I haven't had any freezes since.
