*ACPI* Ryzen Vega freeze under load with amdgpu-pro: Acer laptop

Post by N7_X »

Hello all,
I have an Acer Predator Helios 500 - Ryzen edition (PH517-61) with a few mildly irritating issues. MrEen was fantastic with guiding me to resolve the sound issue present on this model viewtopic.php?f=49&t=312318 and we found out that the deciding factor appeared to be something to do with power. Long story short, I have audio working, credit to MrEen.

Now I'd like to resolve the graphics/power issue going on as well:
Using the open source drivers has no crashing, but the performance is significantly less than it should be. Using amdgpu-pro has the performance where it should be, but everything freezes up until the computer is force rebooted.

I am quickly and easily able to reproduce this by running a Unigine benchmark (Valley.)
The lockup routinely happens within a short time span.

EDIT: Here is my sensors data after a reboot

Code: Select all

amdgpu-pci-0800
Adapter: PCI adapter
vddgfx: +0.81 V
fan1: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM, max = 0 RPM)

mem: +49.0°C (crit = +95.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C)
                       (emerg = +100.0°C)
power1: 15.00 W (cap = 120.00 W)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
Tdie: +51.0°C (high = +70.0°C)
Tctl: +51.0°C
I was watching the sensor output (1 second refresh) and the 'amdgpu-pci-0800' never got within 10°C of the 'crit' levels.
However, the k10temp-pci-00c3 did get to 75.9°C before everything froze and I had to reboot.
One other thing, this time after it froze, the screen went black after a few seconds and switched to a staticy image, slightly similar to the 'snow' with non-digital televisions. That static is something that happens on resuming from sleep, apparently, to users in both Windows & Linux of this laptop. I believe it's suspected to be due to the refresh rate not being set correctly, but I read that discussion months ago.

Just a guess, but since you have AMD Ryzen CPU, maybe #27 here:

Hmm, I've actually never seen this one before. The only part I couldn't follow was the BIOS option, as this laptop BIOS is extremely basic with no power options.
Rebooted, ran Unigine to assess, and it unfortunately still failed. But I do believe that it is a power issue, if you have any more ideas relating to that?

I wonder if you meant to reply to a different post, as the referenced APU is not a part of my system (You'll notice I have a desktop Ryzen 2700 in here which is supported) as well as my video card (Vega 56) per the amdgpu-pro package. At least according to several other Linux users of this card, as well as AMD documentation.

Well this is interesting, I did some more research and found this thread https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/issues/716 where several users are experiencing issues when they are gaming for extended periods of time.
They had the following workaround:

Code: Select all

echo manual > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
echo 7 > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/pp_dpm_sclk
I had to run those commands as root, since sudo still gave me "permission denied."
Unfortunately, this didn't resolve the problem for me, but the behaviour on my end was definitely odd. After setting the power_dpm to manual, the frame rate on Unigine is similar to what I experienced with the open source drivers. This is even with cat'ing pp_dpm_sclk to confirm that it was running at 7. Lowering the speed further lowered the framerate, but the max seemed to be between 20 & 30.
Resetting and rebooting restored normal speed, upwards of 50 fps.

Very odd, in my mind, does anyone have any new ideas from that?
The major difference I see between the users in that thread and myself, is that they would only run into it when gaming for extended periods of time, and I'll get it (relatively) instantly when running a benchmark. No games here

Finally found the info that initially made me believe the root cause was power related https://askubuntu.com/questions/1122662 ... -supply-is

I tried the solution by Pawel Czmok, who coincidentally has the exact same laptop as mine, but that did not work for me. The charge light still fails to show a charge state, GPU performance is either low or locks up the computer.
Notice with upower that my ACAD states online status as "no" even though it is plugged in and running on AC.

Since they mention that the issue lies with the ACPI tables, and assuming that assessment is correct, how would I go about resolving that?

Re: Ryzen Vega freeze under load with amdgpu-pro: Acer laptop

Post by N7_X »

I apologize for so many posts, but I'm trying to separate information as I figure more out.
This has to do with ACPI & DSDT. I went down a rabbit hole and found this page https://iam.tj/prototype/enhancements/W ... i_osi.html which really seemed to be a potential solution. So I followed the direction of adding the following line to the grub config file:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=! \"acpi_osi=Windows 2019\" amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffff7fff"
*Amdgpu featuremask got my sound working again per my previous thread referenced in the OP.

Now when I put in "Windows 2016" - "Windows 2019" the system will hang during boot time for a minute or so, continue again a short distance before finally stopping completely. "Windows 2015" booted without an issue, but the power problems are still here.

I'm attaching photos of both states, since the journalctl did not include all of the information I saw during the boot process.
I think I'm on the right track, but I currently think I may have hit a wall. Thoughts? Comments? If you think I should ask a question about this new information somewhere else, just let me know where and I'll post there.

Thank you!

test this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd7fff amdgpu.dc=1 amdgpu.hw_i2c=1 amdgpu.vm_fragment_size=9 amdgpu.dpm=1 amdgpu.audio=1 amdgpu.ngg=1 selinux=0 security=off audit=0 spectre_v2=off nopti pti=off toram"
comment out your grub line but don't delete it. after every boot first thing open Logs/Important you will see if there is difference between kernel boot parameters. if Logs are basically the same test with no parameters. lot of booting and rebooting

About restarting - i had same issue and i solved my problem - that was overheating during max load. HBM2 do not likes too much heat and i workaround it like this:
install NBFC (https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc)
and then use this command to manually set fan speed:
watch -n 0.1 'mono ec-probe.exe write 0x4f XX' - GPU fan
watch -n 0.1 'mono ec-probe.exe write 0x55 XX' - CPU fan

The "XX" is the "fan speed value" and you can set values 0-11.
refresh is so often, because something try to revert this values.
But be aware that before doing that you need to set on windows fans to "auto". In othercase nbfc do not working correctly. Probably drivers on Windows set some state that after that values from EC are ignored.

After that i forgot about problems with freezing and now i can play and working without troubles:)

There have been significant updates to AMD drivers since April. I have a newer card than you (AMD rx 5700) and have had excellent performance using kernel 5.4 and an updated mesa (20.2). That's really all you need in 19.3/18.04 based OSes.

Your system however has been significantly modified and I notice a lot of repositories added that I don't recognize. I would be hesitant to make any recommendations

Yes sure, performance is correct since some time, but i only answer question why system freezing. I have same issue on Linux and Windows and i need to manual adjust my fan speed depends on load. In other case my system crashing/glitches/freeze.

The temperature on the GPU, in my case, may not exceed 70 degrees. This notebook cooling is quite good, so i can easily keep temperature under 70 degrees, even on the full load of GPU/CPU.

Re: *ACPI* Ryzen Vega freeze under load with amdgpu-pro: Acer laptop

Post by N7_X »

I took a long break from this because work had gotten so busy. Finally had the opportunity to look at it again this week, and decided to start over with a fresh install.
Mint 20.1 beta is out at the time of writing this, so I downloaded that to use as my fresh install image (Note: I do this because I have never experienced a significant issue with Mint betas. I do not recommend making a habit of testing issues with beta distros)

First I updated the kernel to 5.8.x, added the oibaf graphics drivers ppa (for mesa), and set the boot command line to "amdgpu.dpm=0" to disable the dynamic power mode.
Testing several reboots since then, the laptop will boot up recognizing the power adapter. It still fails to detect the state change if you unplug and plug it back in.
Testing the graphics performance showed that the GPU was in low power mode. Not a huge issue for me, as this laptop is not used for gaming, though I do some work that would be very handy with more power.

Next step was to download and install this fix: https://github.com/pastaq/Acer-Ryzen-Helios-AC-Fix/ to hopefully give me back that missing power.
Now unfortunately I did not test that before trying the pczmok fan control, but I had great success with manually setting the fan speeds.

Finally, I turned off the manual fan settings and just ran the Unigine Valley benchmark. No issues happened through 2 full loops of the benchmark on maximum settings! I'll be testing if that performance survives a reboot in a moment, but I wanted to write down everything I did first, so as to not muddy the waters.
I will post an update with *hopefully* good news after some further testing.

Thank you!

It survived a reboot! I ran the Valley benchmark 3 times through with absolutely no issues.
Now this is with the fixes I detailed in the previous post, so anyone else with these issues will need to do some work to get similar results.

EDIT:
Belay that; another reboot and it's not coming up with full power. This laptop is frustrating on its best day, so this may be just intermittent. Sorry for the bad news, I'll keep you posted if I figure anything else out.

Alright, I'm confused, but think I have more information...
I haven't touched this since my last post, so I got to start with a fresh look. First bootup was low performance, like last time. I ran update-grub and rebooted which started in high performance. Unfortunately, we're back to the freeze and crash, so it looks like something got changed. Possibly an update?

I'm hesitant to start over again, though I know that worked before, so I'll try running updates and reapplying every step I did before.

Update #1:
Ran all updates, update-grub, rebooted: low power.
Update-grub, reboot: low power.
Reboot, unplugged power cable and plugged back in: high power.
So now I'm going to reapply previous settings, because it's not supposed to need a power state toggle to change that.

Update #2:
This time after reapplying fixes, update-grub, and rebooting, even toggling the power cable state would not give me high performance. I'll probably start over again here pretty soon, but before I do I'll see if there's a difference with AMD official drivers (if I can get those working.)

Official AMD drivers 20.45 installed just fine on kernel 5.4.0-59, but performance was terrible (open source is definitely best)
So I ended up starting over, as planned:
inxi -CSG -xx

Code: Select all

System:
  Host: Empyrrean Kernel: 5.8.0-34-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A
Desktop: Cinnamon 4.8.5 wm: muffin dm: LightDM
Distro: Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
CPU:
Topology: 8-Core model: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Zen+
  rev: 2 L2 cache: 4096 KiB
  flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 sse4a ssse3 svm
  bogomips: 102205
  Speed: 1376 MHz min/max: 1550/3200 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 1376 2: 1373
  3: 1375 4: 1384 5: 1378 6: 1382 7: 1547 8: 1544 9: 1376 10: 1376 11: 1422
  12: 1376 13: 1518 14: 1421 15: 1380 16: 1467
Graphics:
  Device-1: AMD Vega 10 XL/XT [Radeon RX Vega 56/64]
vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 08:00.0
  chip ID: 1002:687f
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: amdgpu,ati
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~144Hz
  OpenGL: renderer: AMD VEGA10 (DRM 3.38.0 5.8.0-34-generic LLVM 11.0.0)
  v: 4.6 Mesa 21.0.0-devel (git-e8f50bd 2021-01-07 focal-oibaf-ppa)
  direct render: Yes
It's currently working just fine, benchmark went great, so I'm going to try testing it for a little while longer with blender and other stress tests.
Oh, I'll also make sure I'm not updating the kernel in any way until I (hopefully) achieve sustained success.
I'll keep you posted. Thank you!

EDIT:
Ah! So I opened a project in blender, everything loaded in beautifully fast, went to render out, and I get the static screen of doom.
Rebooted, ended up in low performance mode? Toggled power adapter, opened benchmark, graphics are low power, cpu is high power.
Nothing changed between now and then except the static screen of doom. Any ideas? Wondering if I should toy around with fan levels again, but I don't like using a windows utility for that. Also, it's too hack-y for my tastes - it would be better to find and solve the actual root cause here.

Update:
This laptop has several drives, so I save my home folder on a different drive before I clean install. Fortunately, I still have the folder with NBFC compiled, so I was able to test blender with the fans on high speed.
And it crashed with the static screen again. I had the fans on the highest setting, waited until they clearly came up to speed, let the laptop cool down like that, then launched blender and tried to render out a scene (after letting eevee load everything in)
So it looks like temperature is no longer the main problem here... I'm pretty lost from here on out, hopefully someone else is able to suggest something or otherwise pickup where I left off. I'm subscribed to this topic (now) so I should get email notifications if you reply.

Good luck, and thank you!
