[SOLVED]: HDMI port, not working

Post by dobriain »

Hi,

I have recently purchased a ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 to upgrade from my ThinkPad E550. I can connect a second monitor to the E550 via HDMI (or VGA) without issue.

Code: Select all

ThinkPad-E550:~$ inxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5500 driver: i915 v: kernel
           Device-2: AMD Opal XT [Radeon R7 M265/M365X/M465] driver: radeon v: kernel
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: ati,modesetting,radeon unloaded: fbdev,vesa
           resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz, 1440x900~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 5500 (Broadwell GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 19.2.8
However, I am having problems with HDMI on the P1 Gen 2. I did manage to get an NVIDIA driver installed and got connection to the second monitor; however, I lost the video to the laptop screen. When I tried further I ended breaking video on the laptop to the extent that I had to reinstall the operating system. Here is the current graphics setup on the P1 Gen 2.

Code: Select all

ThinkPad-P1-Gen-2:~$ inxi -G
Graphics:  Device-1: Intel driver: i915 v: kernel
           Device-2: NVIDIA driver: N/A
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
           resolution: 3840x2160~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2)
           v: 4.5 Mesa 19.2.8
I upgraded the kernel to see if that helps.

Code: Select all

TP-P1-Gen-2:~$ uname -r
5.6.7-050607-generic
The nouveau driver was applied to device 2.

Code: Select all

[code]ThinkPad-P1-Gen-2:~$ inxi -G
Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel driver: i915 v: kernel
  Device-2: NVIDIA driver: nouveau v: kernel
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.5 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
  resolution: 3840x2160~60Hz
  OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2)
  v: 4.5 Mesa 19.2.8
xrandr shows HDMI-1-1 as connected but nothing on it. I have fiddled with adding modes via xrandr and while the display shows the second screen, it is tiny and the best I can achieve is moving the mouse onto the screen. It shows as a very big cursor. I cannot put an application window onto it.

regards,

Diarmuid

Post the complete output of inxi -Fxz, not just the bits that you think are relevant.
It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.

What did you upgrade the kernel from? 5.3 or 4.15?

I installed Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia which had kernel 5.0.0.32.34. I upgraded initially to 5.6.5 to fix the issue with lack of support for the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2x2 AX wireless card. I thought I was on the ball at that stage but when I connected the second monitor I discovered it wouldn't work. I have tried the following kernels and there is no apparent difference.

5.6.5
5.6.7
5.6.11

I even dropped back to 5.5.19

My latest troubleshooting has me seeing the second monitor if Intel is prime, and the laptop monitor is Nvidia is prime, surely there is a way to see both at the same time?

I downloaded the Nvidia 440 driver directly from their website and installed it. It seem to install an Nvidia X-Server too. After boot the second screen is active but the laptop screen is not.

Hardware

The second monitor has a VGA and a DVI port. I have tried where [XXX] is an adapter;
Monitor <-----------------------> Laptop
DVI [HDMI]---------------------> HDMI
DVI <------------------------[DVI] USB-C
VGA <---------------------[VGA] USB-C

Only noticeable difference was a drop in quality of the video on the second monitor when I switched to VGA.

This is so frustrating, I spent the bones of another day working on it. It took me some time to figure why the UEFI/Legacy Boot was greyed out. It turned out that once the OS Optimized Defaults on a different screen was disabled then I was able to set the UEFI/Legacy Boot to Legacy Only.

BIOS Settings

OS Optimized Defaults: Disabled
Secure Boot: Disabled
UEFI/Legacy Boot: Legacy Only
CSM Support: Yes

I tried changing the Nvidia drivers between 335 and 440 as well as trying the Nouveau opensource drivers but alas I didn't get any progress towards two screen working. I would appreciate some help if possible.

With the Nvidia driver installed and the Nvidia GPU selected, use these two commands and see if the laptop screen is working:

Code: Select all

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
If not, use these commands and post the output: xrandr --verbose and ls /sys/class/drm/

@roblm, thank you for your help, I posted what you requested below. I have been doing some further troubleshooting and it appears as if the Nvidia drivers are not loaded by the kernel. Prime select is nvidia and it looks like nvidia is the driver associated with Device-2 (from the inxi -G command).

Code: Select all

$ inxi -GS
System:    Host: TP-P1-Gen-2 Kernel: 5.5.19-050519-generic x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Cinnamon 4.4.5

           OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Coffeelake 3x8 GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 19.2.8

$ prime-select query
nvidia

$ sudo nvidia-settings

The hardware view seems to show that the second screen is detected by the OS at least.

Re: HDMI port, not working

Post by roblm »

You have created a confusing mess.

1. You previously installed a driver downloaded from Nvidia’s website. Did you remove it before installing nvidia-driver-440 in Driver Manager? If yes, how did you remove it?

2. You created an xorg.conf file using the command sudo nvidia-xconfig. That mis-configured file can’t be used on your Optimus-based laptop. Use this command to remove it: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

3. You have used kernels 5.6.5, 5.6.7, 5.6.11 and now 5.5.19.

The output of ls /sys/class/drm/ does not list the HDMI port, so the kernel driver is unable to detect it:

Code: Select all

card0  card0-eDP-1  renderD128  version
After removing the xorg.conf file, log out and back in and post the output of inxi -G and
lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "3D|VGA"

Don’t post the output of any other commands.

Re: HDMI port, not working

Post by dobriain »

Dear @roblm I have tried everything to make this work, I appreciate your help. To your questions;

1. You previously installed a driver downloaded from Nvidia’s website. Did you remove it before installing nvidia-driver-440 in Driver Manager? If yes, how did you remove it? [I reinstalled the OS to start again]

2. You created an xorg.conf file using the command sudo nvidia-xconfig. That mis-configured file can’t be used on your Optimus-based laptop. Use this command to remove it: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf [DONE]

3. You have used kernels 5.6.5, 5.6.7, 5.6.11 and now 5.5.19.
[That was the result of trying to fix the network card as the Intel Ethernet I219-V wouldn't work with 5.0.0.32.34, currently the system is running 5.5.19 and the network card is working]

After removing the xorg.conf file, log out and back in and post the output of inxi -G and
lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "3D|VGA"

Don’t post the output of any other commands.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -G

You said in your third post:
I upgraded initially to 5.6.5 to fix the issue with lack of support for the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2x2 AX wireless card. I thought I was on the ball at that stage…
It appeared to me from that statement that the wireless problem was fixed, so why install the other 3 newer kernels.

The lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "3D|VGA" output shows no Nvidia kernel modules. Either they were not built during the Nvidia driver installation, or they are prevented from loading because the nouveau kernel module is still loading.

Use this command: sudo update-initramfs -u
After rebooting, use these commands and post the output:

Code: Select all

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
ls /lib/modprobe.d/
prime-select query

Dear @roblm

You said in your third post:

It appeared to me from that statement that the wireless problem was fixed, so why install the other 3 newer kernels.

[ I moved back from 5.6 to the final 5.5 kernel in case the graphics problem was kernel related ]

The lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "3D|VGA" output shows no Nvidia kernel modules. Either they were not built during the Nvidia driver installation, or they are prevented from loading because the nouveau kernel module is still loading.

Use this command: sudo update-initramfs -u [ DONE ]
After rebooting [ DONE ], use these commands and post the output:

You need to remove the Nvidia driver: apt autoremove nvidia-driver-440

After rebooting, use this command to re-install the driver: apt install nvidia-driver-440

Copy the installation log that is displayed in the Terminal window and post the contents.

Reboot and use this command: lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "3D|VGA"

Re: HDMI port, not working

Post by roblm »

This error line is from the installation log:
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.5.19-050519-generic (x86_64)
The Nvidia-440 driver does not have support for the 5.5 kernel. It only has support up to 5.3.

[SOLVED]: HDMI port, not working

Post by dobriain »

Awesome @roblm that worked a treat, thank you so much for your help. It is something that will appear again with Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” though. I tried installing Ubuntu 20.04 to see if that fixed the problem a few days ago and it hadn't. Anyway, thank you for solving this problem.

I changed to a 5.3 Kernel

Code: Select all

$ uname -r
5.3.18-050318-generic

Code: Select all

$ inxi -G
Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel driver: i915 v: kernel
  Device-2: NVIDIA driver: nvidia v: 440.59

  unloaded: fbdev,nouveau,vesa resolution: 1440x900~60Hz
  OpenGL: renderer: Quadro T2000/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 440.59
I removed the Nvidia 440 driver, rebooted and reinstalled the driver. It didn't work until I rebooted again.

Code: Select all

Re: [SOLVED]: HDMI port, not working

Post by roblm »

The only other question is if your Wi-Fi is working with the 5.3 kernel. You previously said it didn’t work with the 5.0 kernel but did with the 5.5.19 kernel.

You tried installing the Nvidia-440.59 driver, which didn’t work with the 5.5.19 kernel.

I just tested the Nvidia-440.82 driver and it works with that kernel. You would have to add the graphics-drivers PPA to get that newer version:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
