Asus Laptop N76VB does not wake up from sleep (Mint 19.3)

Post by Mushin »

Hello, I'm new to Linux Mint.

I installed it on my ASUS Laptop and everything seems to work great except sleep.
It goes to sleep fine but when woken up it displays a black terminal screen.
I tried CTRL + ALT + F1-6 trick and when I type in the login the cursor just jumps below, nothing happens.
Seems to be stuck I can type but the system doesn't react to input. Needs restart to work again.

Didn't have much luck with google, I tried several solutions including one for Ubuntu and it did not help.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/53372/s ... sus-laptop

I use recommended nvidia driver installed from the driver manager.
The open source driver had a similar issue.
System crash reports don't show anything.

More Hardware and Software Detail:

It would be great if this was possible to fix I use standby frequently. Better than just locking the screen to conserve battery when needed.
Anyone know of a solution :?:

Try installing then booting to the the latest kernel for series 5.4. Reboot and test. If that doesnt work , the latest kernel from 4.15 series and reboot. You can choose the kernel to boot from advanced options in grub menu. Good luck.

Thanks very much for your help! The 4.15.18 kernel worked for me.

Re: Asus Laptop N76VB does not wake up from sleep (Mint 19.3) [SOLVED]

If someone needs more detail.
Here is how I installed the kernel:

I didnt know there is a simpler way of doing this. Look at the post below this one.

1. See which kernel is the latest longterm / stable one:
https://www.kernel.org/
2. Go to ubuntu repository and find the latest stable build that has a succesfully compiled version for your arhitecture.
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
3. Dowload header*_all.deb file and generic kernel deb files.
4. Save them in a convenient folder like ~/Linux-Kernel-Version-Upgrade
5. cd into the folder and run:

Code: Select all

sudo -s dpkg -i *.deb
6. After install update grub to know which kernels are installed, run:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
7. (These steps are specific to my laptop model N76VB)
  • reboot and hold esc key
  • select the disk to boot from
  • press ENTER and IMIDIATELY press ESC
8. Select the correct kernel number and press ENTER
9. Start a terminal and use this command to check for kernel version:

Code: Select all

uname -a
10. Try if the sleep works
11. If not repeat steps above to install another kernel version. For me 4.15.18 worked.

-----------------------------------------------------------

To make the kernel change permanent:
1. Edit this file in your text editor of choice:

Code: Select all

/etc/default/grub
2. Add or change the folowing lines:

Code: Select all

GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
3. Save the changes
4. Update grub

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
5. Reboot and enter the grub menu like before
6. Selecting the desired kernel entry now will make the change permanent due to the settings changed in /etc/default/grub

You don't need to do that complicated procedure.
In update manager--view--kernels will let you install.

A year later... problem still persists!

Post by Mushin »

Maybe I should start a new topic... I'll try again here first.

So after a year passed the problem is persistent I can still switch to the 4.18.0-25 generic kernel to get stand-by working.
But it would be nice to have it working with the latest kernel in 5.4.0+ series.

Could this be done is there some bug in the new 5.4 kernel or is this just a matter of my laptop being fairly old or something :?:
Specs can be found in my first post.

Should this be reported as a bug in the linux kernel?

Post by Mushin »

I have tried several distros and this is what I have found:

Sleep works with the open source driver on Linux Mint 19.3, but does not work with the recommended nvidia driver.
Tried Manjaro... same there with the nvidia driver it wont work.
Tried MXLinux, sleep working there by default because it uses an older kernel version.

In general it looks like it's a kernel related issue.
On any distro I tried with nvidia driver and 5.10+ kernel sleep wont work.
On any distro with 4.18 or similar kernel version it works.

Is this a regression / bug in the kernel :?: Should it be reported, any chance it could get fixed :?:

You can install any of the kernel versions in Mint and boot to it. It's not a bug as kernels go on dropping support for older devices and incorporates for newer devices.

Thank you for your reply!

So I can safely continue using the most recent 4.xx series kernel and be fine in terms of security and future linux mint functionality :?:
Is there a way to prevent the software update from switching the kernel every time?

Right click the software you don't want to update in update manager and click ignore updates. But avoid doing that. But do run the latest 4.x.x kernel. It is LTS .

4.15 supported until April 2023

Post by Mushin »

Ok I did not know there were LTS kernels, the previews kernel I used: 4.18 was end of life... so I thought there could be problems with updates.
The 4.15.0-142 kernel is listed as Supported until April 2023, so I will use that one :D

Thanks again for your help!

Are you suggesting that I should use the 5.4.x kernels?
None of these 5.4.x kernels work with stand-by on my laptop.

Here we go again...

Post by Mushin »

After changing to the 4.15 kernel everything was fine for some time.
Now suddenly after a update it does not wake from sleep again! The 4.15 kernel is still selected and there were no updates to it.
Next I tried with the 4.18 kernel and that one works... but for how long and it's: "end of life".
I tried to sudo apt-get purge the other kernels including 4.15, reinstalled and rebooted with 4.15 but no luck.
Almost like some settings or something gets changed after a while and then stops working.

Confusing.

Kernels can be updated or purged from update manager--view--kernels. This is the easy and safe way.

Curiosity got me so I tried installing LMDE 4 on another SSD.
With kernel version 4.19.0-8 laptop returns from sleep perfectly. With 4.19.0-16 which appeared after update, a black window with a terminal cursor appears and the system freezes.
Also nvidia Setting won't launch from System Settings on LMDE 4 with either of the kernels. Still have to figure out how to install and remove kernels or check if the nvidia driver is running on LMDE.
