Linux Mate 19.3 Kernel 5.0.53 Can't restart

Post by opnsrctechtrn »

Using Linux Mate 19.3 - kernel 5.0.53

Everything is fine, but the system hangs when restarting. Things progress along, screen goes black, everything stops, but the restart never starts. The power LED stays on white.

Seems like it's a process waiting, but this also happens if no applications are running. Not a huge deal, but concerning nonetheless.

The plot thickens. Tried adding acpi=force to grub, run update-grub and issue still persists (this is an attempt from the magic of Google).

I originally was thinking it could be a software I installed, but booting to 5.3.0-46 the restart works. In kernel 5.3.0-53 no dice. I think there was a systemd update in between so I suspect it has to do with that, but not sure.

Any kernel previous to 5.3.0-53 should work. It's a known issue with Ryzen/amdgpu. See here.

Thanks MrEen! I was assuming it was such, though I did see it first when trying to reboot after the upgrade from 5.3.0-51 to 5.3.0-53 - I guess the amdgpu was already in the driver update then? Testing again with 5.3.0-51 did work so that's good. I generally suspend the system which thankfully still works so not a huge impact, for me, just found it odd. Thank you again for the insight.

This is resolved in Kernel 5.3.0-59-generic.

Yup. Looks like everyone that was affected has been cured with 5.3.0-59. :D
