OpenGL 3.3 on Intel X3100/GMA965 graphics..?

Post by karsti »

Hi,

I want to teach my son in Blender 2.83. I use this version. His Thinkpad X61s (my old laptop) only supports OpenGL 2.1 due to glxinfo. Blender requires OpenGL 3.3. I can run it in Software mode (CPU only) but it is just unusable slow. 5-10 sec. between every interaction.

https://thinkwiki.de/X61
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Gra ... 176.0.html
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM (with 500 MHz core speed) and 960GM (400 MHz) chipset (for Merom = Core 2 architecture). It is the successor of GMA 950.

I really don't want him to use to old interface of Blender 2.79. He will learn obsolete stuff. Also I cannot help him properly, since I am on 2.83.

I am desperate. Is the ANY solution - however EXPERIMENTAL - to get OpenGL 3.3 running on this old laptop?

Thanks in advance!

There is, but the last time I pointed out to someone that the solution is to buy a new machine, the moderators jumped on me for being unhelpful.
It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.

Don't worry...I already considered this. Still, I would rather not. Not only the money but also the little laptop is perfect for my son. Also it works with Blender 2.79 quite fast. Blender 2.8.x introduced this OpenGL3.3 dependency. It often leads to problems on new machines even if they support a recent version of OpenGL.

Maybe I create an account on my desktop PC (also Linux) for my son. He then connects to his account from his laptop. All PCs are in the local network. What is the best solution for this (fast!) ?
