B550 motherboards not OK with Mint 20

Post by perdomot »

Just finished trying out Mint 20 Cin from a fast USB drive and noticed some serious issues with slow performance. Boot up took over 3 minutes and the desktop was sluggish with apps taking several seconds to open. Altering window sizes was also slow at first. Shutting down did not work properly either. Anybody with a new B550 mobo should wait a bit for these bugs to get cleared out. Love the new look but performance is king in my book.

What is the rest of your hardware?

This nothing inherent to b550 boards that are radically different from b450/b350 boards.

Rather than blindly blaming 'bugs' with Linux Mint and a whole series of motherboards, why not use your experience from 120+ forum posts to detail the problem properly and ask for assistance.

Running a Ryzen 3600 with an Asus B550 Gaming F mobo, 16GB Corsair 3200 ram and a GTX 1060 card. I assumed it would be OK because I just replaced my B450 mobo and never had a problem with Mint 19.3. It might have been Cinnamon so I'm going to check the XFCE version next.

My original post details what I experienced very clearly. I have not experienced this with Manjaro Gnome and Elementary OS so far. Reporting my experience is not "blindly blaming" anything or anyone. I plan on trying the XFCE version next and see how that performs.

UPDATE:
Booted the XFCE 20 on my thumb drive in 18 seconds and everything seemed to work fine except for the fact that it does not detect that my ethernet cable is attached and makes me sign in to my wireless. I burned the Cinnamon ISO back onto the thumb drive, ran it and again experienced the same issues of very slow boot up and app launching as well as being unable to exit normally.

I see you are running a B450 mobo which I believe makes a difference. My previous MSI B450 mobo seemed to work fine with 19.3 so I suspect there is something going on with B550 and Cinnamon as I just tried XFCE without issue.

I've burned the same iso twice so I'm gonna download it again and try it a third time. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, the new ISO for 20 Cin has the same issues, although it did boot slightly faster at 93 seconds. Out of curiosity, I DL the 19.3 Cin, burned it to USB and it booted in 21 seconds and work perfectly except for the same ethernet issue. My new mobo is running the Intel® I225-V 2.5Gb Ethernet so there might be some issue there. I suspect something about the display drivers is off as Mint 20 has better Display control on its applet than 19.3. Saw a video by Joe Collins on Youtube describing problems with Virtualbox video being "glitchy" and I remember the issues when AMD released their APU's and there were issues getting video output too. At least XFCE seems fine so that's good. Curious about Mate now so I think I'll check that out too.

Also I noticed you mentioned booting from USB. Did you actually do a hard drive install to see if the problems are there?

Currently running Manjaro Gnome without any issues so all my hardware is OK. I have not installed on my hardware, just USB. So far, Cinnamon and Mate have issues while XFCE seems to be fine. Only other OS I've checked is Elementary on USB and that worked fine too. Thinking of trying PopOS and MxLinux to see if there are any issues there. Really wanted to get back into Mint but I've moved away from XFCE and have been using Gnome for the last year so I wanted Cinnamon to work. Hoping somebody with a B550 motherboard has installed it and chimes in with some info on their experience.

All three mint flavors use the exact same kernel. Cinnamon can give trouble if your graphics drivers are borked, which may be the case in a live cd environment since the Nvidia drivers don't load automatically always. Don't understand why Mate is give you trouble because by default Marco uses a cpu compositor.

If Pop Os is working, as is Mint Xfce it's not a hardware compatibility issue. All these OSes are the same under the hood.

You can try booting the Mint Live CD in safe graphics mode, try a full install and then install the Nvidia driver to see if it works. I see no reason it shouldn't.

Btw if you like the workflow of gnome 3, Cinnamon looks nothing like gnome 3 standard. Stick to pop os because I think it's the best execution of gnome 3 in the Ubuntu family.

Thanks for the feedback. I think something is up with the graphics driver. Manjaro kernel is 5.6.16-1 which is a bit ahead of Mint but since XFCE worked fine, I agree that I don't think that's the issue. The lack of ethernet worries me more as I'd be stuck if my mobo didn't have wireless. Some of the new B550 don't have wifi so its gonna be a big issue. Hope someone has raised this issue with the team.

I tried PopOS and there were some issues with performance even though I got the ISO with the latest Nvidia drivers. Kernel was 5.4 series so I think you definitely need a newer kernel to go with the graphics driver. Ethernet and wifi worked out of the box which is good news. Also tried Mx Linux to check out the Debian side and while it appeared to work great, no ethernet or wifi for the new B550. Had to use my old USB dongle to get online. I think these mobos are just too new and its gonna take a while to catch up for most distros.

From what I read the Intel ax200 should be supported in kernels newer than 5.2. It has been used in x570 boards.
