Keyboard remapping: is there a package for this?

My 'Compoint' mini-keyboard has some mismatches between the key top labels and what Mint actually 'produces'. I have just used the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator application under Win 10 on another computer to correct a serious mismatch on its keyboard. The MSKLC program surprised me by working so easily and so well.

Is there some equivalent way to remap the keyboard I am using here, under Mint, on the his dual boot computer?

You can remap some keys by editing /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols files.
What's your LM version, keyboard layout and what do you want to change?

Thanks for this. In trying to answer the question 'what is your keyboard layout?' I was guided to system settings and learned that I could change the layout there as well as select a different keyboard layout from the panel. Switching to a different layout has solved all my problems (except one) in one action.

The only remaining issue I have is that my keyboard does not have 'back-slash' key on it - which is vital for typing names for windows shares. Can I fix that by editing the symbols files as you suggested ?

English (UK, intl., with dead keys) has back-slash symbol: AltGr + - = \
Do you want it in different position?

One has to differentiate between the mapping and the physical keyboard. the mapping for that particular layout assigns the back-slash to a key that is adjacent to and to the left of the Z key. My keyboard has no such key, which is a justification, of sorts, for my assertion that the back-slash symbol is not printed on any key.
