... But, I did get a lot (around 20) of "possible missing firmware amdgpu ... " errors, but it all worked fine with the external HDMI.
this is normal, everyone with a ryzen cpu gets the same thing

Hang on tight. AMD is good with kernel patches. By OCtober I think the 4500u/4700u will be flying in Linux. Might finally replace my 4 year old laptop next year with one them.
Thanks, I noticed there was a 5.8-rc7 (I assume "rc" means Beta, Released for Comment) kernel and might give that a try since it is a pretty simple process to swap-in/out. And, Timeshift will save my butt if it goes wobbly.

Yes, I **am** Dyslexic and try to catch little critters, but sometimes one or tow escapes.

I wasn't concerned about them once I saw things working shortly thereafter. I just thought I'd mention them in case someone else is trying to get this working and to let them know it is still going to be OK.

I have no qualms about installing possible a crash and burn OS. With any new laptop I always replace the SSD/M.2 with a new one so at worst I can put the OEM SSD+system back in for a working PC.

That's also handy if something breaks in hardware and it needs warranty work and my personal files remain here. I've been hearing some touch-pad issues with these things, but so far it has been stellar for me.

5.8 has massive revisions. It's a very different kernel. You've been warned!

Ummm, did you read the last part of my reply to trytip? I could care less about a crash or two.

And, as it happens, 5.8 was officially released a day or so back and last night I installed it.

It all seems fine so far. It has cured the lagging wireless mouse issues so it is all good.

A faint heart never won a fair lady.:D
