I believe those 0x0 values are normal. The only time I've seen otherwise is a bad output of 0x0ffffff or something similar.

We're into guessing territory now. See if the first three blocks on this post have any effect.

You can also try a 4th block with 0x08 at the end of each line. Do those blocks one line at a time, but test your sound after each 3 line block.

The fifth block would have 0x10 at the end of each line, but I rather doubt going that far will help, but I could be wrong. The other three are 0x20, 0x40 and 0x80.

Still no sound! Tried everything up to 0x10.

Ahh, crud!!!

Because of the other thread on this, we've been using 0x477, when 0x400 is the appropriate command. I have no idea how 0x477 worked, as it isn't even in the source code.

Again, I'm really hoping these are the only 2 necessary:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x1b

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x4e4b
And:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x0f

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x7778

I'm really sorry about that. I should have use the words instead of the hex stuff like I used to, which would look like this:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x1b

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 SET_PROC_COEF 0x4e4b
Again, no idea how the other one got it working with the wrong command!

I'm wondering, as there's nothing else in the source that starts with 0x4, if it just defaults to the proper command. If that's the case, the above isn't going to help most likely, but I'm going to hold out hope anyway!

Ohh, shoot me now!

Your built-in card is card 1, not card 0.

My weak defense is since last week, I have to use the Tor window option on Brave browser just to connect to the forum, and it really messes with my workflow, to the point I'm thinking of taking a break from the forum until the issue is solved.

The proper steps for you should be this:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x1b

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_PROC_COEF 0x4e4b
And:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x0f

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_PROC_COEF 0x7778

So, new problem.

I tried the new 0x400 code blocks, still to no avail. I was going to go through and try the next ones after a quick reboot (probably wasn't necessary) but lo and behold Linux is now no longer booting up. I get the dual boot menu but when I select Linux some code flashes by on the screen, the green loading circle might show up for a bit, and then the screen goes black. I tried to snap a picture of the code on my phone but the camera is too garbage to resolve the text. I tried 3 or 4 times and waited for at least 7 minutes but the screen remained persistently black.

Wondering if just reinstalling an older version of Mint would make everything easier (although maybe not, considering the aforementioned new thingamajig in my computer).

Hey, either way thanks for the help! Would love to try that new code for card 1 but this is not possible at this time, hahaa

Well damn!

I'd first try a complete shutdown. Wait a couple of minutes before powering back up. Also make sure Fast Boot is Off in the BIOS if it's there (even if you turned it off previously, a Windows update might have turned it back on.) Same goes for Fast Startup from within Windows.

Tried this morning to boot Linux to no avail after turning off fast startup and fast boot in Windows. I did manage to read the code on the screen when Linux is trying to boot, though:

Code: Select all

[ 0.517233] Initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed
[ 0.528382] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to read/write to IOMMU perf counter.
Do I just need to reinstall Mint? How would I go about removing the current Linux install without booting from it? It wouldn't be a huge deal since I don't have a whole lot of stuff on there yet, though it woooould be nice if I didn't need to

This isn't an area I'm skilled at whatsoever. I believe I've seen that the initramfs thing can be safely ignored. A quick search on the other indicates something that is sometimes fixed with a kernel upgrade (or downgrade) and I've seen some people having issues with the latest 5.4 kernel. Booting to the previous kernel via the Advanced options in the grub menu might get you past this issue.

Well, bizarrely and with no warning Linux has returned. Maybe it had something to do with holding the shift key to get to the grub menu, who knows. Gonna try the next bit of code for the sound!

When I quickly searched on your second error, I saw at least one poster say they failed to boot "occasionally" so you may still have issues in the future. Just letting you know what I've read. It's possible this won't happen again, but I can't say for sure either way.

Good luck with the corrected commands! :D

Still nothing!

Code: Select all

karl@Bibbus:~$ sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x1b
[sudo] password for karl:
nid = 0x20, verb = 0x500, param = 0x1b
value = 0x0

Well, it's not looking promising, but we should try the others as well:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_COEF_INDEX 0x10

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x20 SET_PROC_COEF 0xc420
My next post will have the rest of them.

Okay, time for a new tack. I highly doubt this will help, but it's worth a shot:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/zenbook-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel model=asus-zenbook'
Reboot then test the sound.

That's an old thing that probably won't apply to your new computer, hence my doubts.

If no change, undo it with this:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/zenbook-fix.conf

Still nothing!

Could it potentially have something to do with the wrong sound card being chosen as the default? Or does that not really matter here

I somewhat doubt that's the issue, but we should double check. Play something with sound and run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. I think the issue is more of a newer hardware thing. And for some stupid reason, each model of Zenbook requires a different fix.
